How much should I offer to pay a location for my student film shoot?

How much should I offer to pay a location for my student film shoot? Next February I'll be shooting a short film as my major project for my masters degree at university. While I'd really like to have a decent amount of money to put into the production, it's not realistic for me at this point. I have saved around $1,000 for the project so far.

As such, I have volunteer actors and crew and all the film equipment and insurance is provided by my university. Everyone is providing their own transport and I'll be providing them with meals. I'm borrowing costumes and props from everyone I've ever spoken to :)

I found a location that would be perfect, but it is rented out to holidaymakers for $1800, per 3 days, the duration of my shoot. At that price, the location was definitely out of my league, but I didn't think it would hurt to ask while I kept looking. I figured that it might be a bit forward asking to use the location for free, so I decided to contact the property manager to see if they would let me use the property for my film for a token fee.

I explained that it was a student film, that it was not a commercial project, is not likely to make any revenue and explained my budgetary constraints. In return, I offered them a credit, copy of the film on dvd, high quality stills if they would like them for their advertising, and a link to their website, if I place the film online or build it a website.

The property manager has contacted the owner who seems agreeable to everything so far and mentioned that we'd be liable for breakages, damages etc. But they have now thrown the ball back into my court and asked me to propose an amount to them as my "token fee". The property manager will then see if the owner is agreeable with it.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should be offering? Is there a standard formula, like locations are typically $x of a film's budget?

Or if anyone could point me in the direction of some useful websites about film budgeting, so I can calculate it (and the rest of my expenses) out on my own, I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks for your help!

Can I get paid just to be somewhere for a long time?

Starting next summer, is there a way I can make money just by being somewhere for up to 18 months? I'll only need an internet connection. Starting sometime next summer I'll be wrapping up my degree online, and will therefore not really need to be in any specific location. Is there a way I could relocate and turn this into some sort of income?

Because of the time I'll be spending on school, things that require a lot of work, like WWOOF are out, but something low-key, like long term paid house-sitter (or Gondorian Warning Beacon Guard) would presumably be a perfect fit. I plan on taking anywhere from 12-24 months to finish, with a more definite time to be determined in the next few months.

Beyond house-sitter - can I even get paid for that? - are there any other "jobs" that would pay me just for being somewhere? Being located in the Mid-west would be ideal, but I'm very interested in anything else.

Where to throw a party in San Francisco?

Suggestions for birthday party locations to rent in San Francisco? I'm thinking about throwing a party for my 40th birthday in October and have been racking my brain for ideas for places to go or to rent. My best guess is about 30 people (could be less or more, probably depending on how cool the event is!), preferably an evening/night event, and those thousand-dollar-and-up uber-swanky places are definitely out. It's quite likely I'd want to have a couple bands I know play, and have some sort of music going (probably from an ipod playlist) the rest of the time. I could set up some sort of bar if the venue doesn't have one--quite a number of my friends are big drinkers, so availibility of booze would help grease the rails!

Every year on my birthday I just have friends show up at a bar (Zeitgeist, Casanova) so I don't have to bother with planning. This year I'm open to trying something a little more special--but ideally I'd like the venue to be cool enough that it will do some of the work of making the party successful. (I don't want a bunch of people standing around just *looking* at each other. Horror!)

Any suggestions would be gratefully welcomed. From looking at past Metafilter postings, it looks like art galleries are a possibility--does anyone know one or two in particular that might do the trick? I'm also open to suggestions for places or party ideas that are very cool but that are outside of what it seems I'm looking for.

I'm curious about 'trojan' software for tracking a computer after it's been stolen. Human Interest Part: A very cool local bike co-op recently had a bunch of equipment stolen, including an old computer. This got me to thinking about the possibility of tracking a computer after it's been nicked.

Technical Part: So I'm thinking it should be possible (and even easy) to write a script such that a machine transmits it's IP address and a bit of identifying data to a trusted source when it connects to the net and every ten minutes or so thereafter. On the other end, another machine is set up to receive said data. This could potentially be either a pair of personal computers that are stored in separate locations, or a central server at Google or something that everyone uses. Presumably, the IP address could then be used to obtain a physical location for the missing computer, should it ever be stolen.

Questions: Does it exist already? And if not, I'm curious about the feasibility of this as a project. The weak link that I have little real knowledge of is how accurately one can turn an IP address into a physical location. Any thoughts?

FWIW, I prefer linux/*nix-friendly answers, though hearing about existing software for Windows wouldn't put me off.

I also fully understand how creepy this software would be on a personal computer; I ask mainly for the purposes of an organization that would be trying to track a usually-stationary computer.

I'm in Windows XP. Whenever I manage files in various apps, like "save as" or "open file," there's that stack of location icons on the left such as My Recent Documents, Desktop, My Computer, My Network Places, etc.

I want to destroy the My Recent Documents and My Network Places locations and add a custom folder or drive to that stack of location icons--or whatever the heck you call that.
Where's a good meadow near L.A.?

Where's a good meadow near Los Angeles? I'm looking for your basic pleasant-for-a-picnic type of meadow. i don't want to actually have a picnic, but I want to shoot photos or video of people pretending to have a picnic.

The catch is that L.A. is in a desert, and even most places you see listed as nice picnic spots will be very un-photogenic- devoid of flowers, color, trees and even pleasant-looking grass.

I'm influenced by French new-wavey type films (thanks to a previous AskMe) and what I'm looking for is similar to the locations seen in the trailer for Le Bonheur. (in an ideal world my spot would be a little more colorful than what's in the trailer, but that film captures the spirit of what I want.)

My requirements are:
ideally within a 2-3 hour drive of L.A.
not overrun with people, but not impossible to reach carrying basic film/photo equipment.

Suggestions with photos online greatly appreciated! Thanks!

location, location, location!

Am considering buying a house both on a bus route/busyish street and a few houses down from a school. What should I be aware of before I make this purchase? Found a very reasonably priced house in downtown toronto - almost TOO reasonable. One of the reasons is that it right next to the pretty tree lined streets, but it is itself on a decently-busy street. Not afraid to cross the road busy, but one lane each way, wait for a couple cars to pass busy. On that road is a bus. While I know this drops the price, I actually think this is convenient and will help in my commute to work, but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts both positive or negative about living on a busy-ish street with a bus route.

As well, another positive (or negative) is that the house is a couple doors down from a school, kindergarden to grade 6. While this would be very convenient when we have kids, is there anything we should worry about due to the proximity, or is there any way to effectively check out if this is brings bad elements out in the neighbourhood?

A third question - any idea how much these factors above would influence price (either percentage-wise, or something like 'greatly', 'hardly at all' would be helpful).

Other than those issues, we like everything about the place. So, should we be nervous about them? Thanks!

How do we pick our wedding location?

We both live in New York. His family lives here and he was born/raised here. My family is in Michigan where I was born/raised. I've been here two years. We're talking about getting married. How do we pick where to get married? We'd like to get married in a Catholic church. Our concerns are that obviously one of our families is going to have to do some major traveling to get to the other's part of the country.

We don't want the wedding to be lopsided with a mess-load of people showing up from the family who lives by wherever we pick with like, five people showing up from the traveling side.

It would be quite a bit cheaper to marry in Michigan not only because prices are lower there but because I have connections with a photographer and DJ.

Also, having spent my first 23 years of life there... I am very familiar with venues and vendors near my hometown. Whereas I don't have any experience with any potential reception sites etc. around here.

BUT ... we do live in NY. So as far as meeting with vendors - we could do that at our leisure rather than try to cram everything into one trip back to Michigan. And it would definitely be easier to complete all of the requirements for marrying in a church close to home for us.

Thanks!

*Alternately... we HAVE thought about possibly trying to pull something off between our two hometowns. Somewhere in PA probably. That way no one's family has to make a huge trip but everyone would have to do a little traveling. But most people shot down this idea.

Food "Glorious" Food

Looking for cheap caterers (or alternatives to caterers) in New York City for a wedding! Some of you may be familiar with my innumerable Askme wedding questions. We're starting to work all of that out, and we honing in on setting a date and getting things organized.

There's just one sticking point - food. Catering is so expensive! The caterers are asking for so much money! Even just asking for them to do cocktails and dessert costs a fortune. So my question breaks down thusly:

1.) Do you know of caterers in New York City who will do things like buffet or cocktails and dessert for a reasonable price?
2.) Have you had good experience using catering alternatives, like your friends and family? How has that worked for you?
3.) We have spoken to one company which offers "drop off service" for buffet style food and their prices are very reasonable, but we would have to hire help. Does this seem like a recipe for disaster?

Details:

-Wedding will likely be around 110 people.
-Our upper limit for food prices is $4k-$5k.

Feel free to ask me any questions. I'll follow up.

Raising a family in New Zealand. How much has where you grew up determined your personality?

How much has where you grew up determined your personality? How important is location? Those who grew up in New Zealand, how much has its culture and limitations shaped you? Children of expats, how did having expat parents influence you? Any Americans in NZ want to tell me why they are raising their children there? And I'm not asking this since I just saw "Away We Go." It just occurred to me the similarity of this question. I often think about where would be the best place to raise a child. Yes circumstance usually dictates, but let's forget that for the moment. I am American but also a New Zealand citizen where my large family on my father's side lives in Auckland. I have always heard that NZ is an amazing place to raise your child, however I have some concerns that maybe you all can help me with.

My experience has mostly been of Auckland and my own family. My family network there is very large and insular with very little room for individuality. I don't think anyone in my generation there has gone to college and they all work for the family business. They all talk of leaving but never do. They are an amazing family, but culturally ignorant and occasionally offensive (for example re gays). I am an artist, my partner a lexicographer, we adore the outdoors, but also like intelligent conversation and debate about everything, anything (University of Chicago life of the mind anyone?). We have considered raising our future children in NZ but basically I don't want them to grow up to be like the rest of my family there, isolated in terms of cultural and intellectual knowledge and respect, open-mindedness and curiosity. Individuality, achievement is a very American value, one that can sometimes be taken too far, but I don't want to rob my children of it if they grow in a more insular culture. My cousin tells me it gets more insular as you move south in NZ from Auckland but I don't know whether to believe her, and I wouldn't want to live in Auckland.

How much does or has location determined your personality? I think it's determined by your parents more than anything (contradicting conventional thought that it's your friends who are the most influential, but I've just never encountered that in anyone I know) but what about extended family?
I've heard Wellington is the culture capital of NZ, is this true? Are there other places? Is it true that cultural exposure declines as you head south?
Those who have grown up in NZ, have you felt a full cultural and intellectual exposure and life?
Any Americans in NZ want to tell me their stories? Why and where do you live in NZ? (Though it would be Saturday for you now, so are you even checking MF?)
Friends I've known who left NZ to see the world have all moved back. What's up with that?

What was the original French he used? and are there any other terms for the act and outcome of paths that emerge through routine, reflexion and the feedback of movement. What was Bachelard's original name for desire lines, in French?

Also, I am not just interested in desire lines as object/artefact, but the actual act of creating/adding to desire lines. Is there a different term for this? or a series of related terms? any terms from other areas/disciplines which pop into your head?

Some past ask.mefis that touch on this subject:

I'd really love to read any notions/ideas you have regarding this concept. Thanks!

For the last ten years or so, I've had chronic pain and mild swelling in (what I think are) my parotids, the largest of the salivary glands. However, my docs beg to differ (sometimes with me and often with each other, it seems). Help me figure out what hurts. HISTORY

Over the years, I've consulted a number of doctors about this pain, and, seemingly, no consensus can be reached among them. It would be one thing if the issue was whether or not the pain or swelling was considered medically significant in their opinion, but it seems that the problem receiving the most attention is determining whether or not it's actually my parotid glands that are the site of my complaint at all. Some feel it's simply neck lymph nodes that remain chronically inflamed, and for this there's not much they can do. Others feel it's the parotid glands and refer me along to various specialists. Who invariably state that it's just a couple of swollen lymph nodes. And so on. It's like a giant sinkhole of confusion for me.

What I'd really like to determine is what the site of my discomfort is called, definitively, so that I might visit a specialist who is comfortable diagnosing and treating this particular issue. So far, I seem to be hearing "lymph nodes" from an ENT, an Allergist, and my GP ...and "parotids" from an Immunologist, one Dentist, and another MD. That, and "twisted sphenoid bone" from one Doctor of Oriental Medicine. The parotid folks referred me to the ENT and the Allergist for treatment; the ENT and Allergist feel it's not a parotid/salivary issue but an issue with chronic lymph node inflammation, probably due to immune system/autoimmune disorders (which I have). The doc who believes it's the sphenoid bone is out of the picture because I no longer live near his practice and cannot seek his treatment.

DESCRIPTION OF COMPLAINT

The pain/mild swelling is bilateral, with the locus being exactly behind my earlobes in the "hollows" there, extending about 1 cm inferior to that area, and deep within my neck. The pain is best described as a constant and tiring dull ache that feels best when I'm pressing in on it with significant pressure. At times the pain's hard to ignore, other times it's kind of in the background. Visually, you don't notice the swelling, but it is palpable as a hardness distinct from the surrounding areas of my neck. There is no swelling or pain on my face in the mumps-y area in front of my ears, as seen in this photo of parotid swelling.

VISUAL COMPARISONS

Here's a diagram showing a drawing of the location of the parotid glands. Here's another. And another. Two more. And this one. Lastly, here's a cadaver image of the gland. As you can see from each of the images, the location of the parotid gland may or may not include the area behind the earlobe, depending on the source material. Some medical texts indicate that there is no parotid tissue beneath the earlobe, others seem to indicate there is.

For comparison, here are the approximate locations of lymph nodes of the head and neck. Unless I'm not finding the right images, the spot that bothers me does not appear to be a lymph node.

OK

I know YANMD, etc., but...

Any thoughts as to whether this is likely to be a lymph node issue I'm dealing with or a parotid gland issue, from your own perspective? Any similar experiences? I believe this problem began in earnest around the time I got a whole slew of vaccines I was required to get last minute prior to a year spent living in Asia. I was majorly sick in the weeks leading up to my departure and on and off thereafter.

Suggestions as to what kind of testing I should ask for regardless of what the site of the pain is actually called? I'm kind of at a loss and more than a little frustrated not to have made better headway in figuring out how to deal with this yet.

FYI

I'm in my mid 30s, female, I get sick way too often with frequent sore throats/colds (stupid tonsils), and I've got hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's thyroiditis (autoimmune), fibromyalgia, CFIDS, hypersomnia, among other diagnoses I'm not sure whether to trust (IBD, cyclical Cushings, dysbiosis), and, according to my OMD, "several viruses in your blood." My EBV titers are sometimes wacky; sometimes normal. Haven't had much other viral testing. Other usual bloodwork comes back normal. My C-Reactive Protein test (?) came back high suggesting significant internal inflammation (?).

I've been treated variously with prednisone, flonase, anti-histamines, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatories for this complaint over the years to no avail. Acupuncture and herbs for this issue have helped less than I'd hoped, so far. I've been ignoring the pain for the past three years or so, mostly because I wasn't getting anywhere with the various doc visits and the prescribed treatments. Money has also been in short supply at times, making follow up even harder. But I'm really curious and a bit scared about this, since it hasn't gone away or receded at all over the years. Yeah, it's time to figure out what's up.

Thanks for reading this crazy long, involved post.

Tutoring Location

Where is a good place to tutor a high school student that is not the student's house? Or is a student's house a fine enough place? I would like to meet in a library or quiet cafe but a) I don't know the area very well, b) I've called the libraries in the area and they don't have "study rooms" and otherwise don't seem to be all that conducive to studying. Typically I'd have the student come to our study center, but she lives more than an hour away and so we are meeting closer to her house. Tutoring in the student's house is a possibility, but I don't want it to be a distracting atmosphere, not to mention I'd like to work in a public space because of the older male tutor/young female tutoree dynamic. Obviously if I tutor at the house, I would do it in a common area (not bedroom) where the parents are in seeing/hearing distance. Also, this is going to be one of my first tutoring sessions and I'm a bit apprehensive having the parents around the entire time. Perhaps I'm worrying for nothing.

Tutors: where have you found the best tutoring locations? Should I try to find a cafe? Should I just do it in the middle of the library? Should I not worry about doing it at home? Thanks for your help and advice.

Location-based reminders for Blackberry

Is there an application for Blackberry that has the ability to give location-specific reminders? The goal: to be able to specify reminders to only go off when the device is in a specified geographic area. Example - I need to pick up something I left at a friend's house, but I only want to be reminded when I am in the vicinity of his house.

Is there a standalone blackberry app that provides this, or a web-based app that can work with location information provided by, for example, google latitude, and generate SMS/email reminders?

How much should my wedding cost, and how can I do it cheaper? So I recently got engaged (previously) and we're now planning the wedding. The thing is, we want to have a decent sized wedding (@ 150 people), but we want to do it on the cheap. Our families will likely not be assisting us financially with doing this. Problem is, I have no idea how much I should be preparing to spend.

Fortunately, we will be able to save some money in a few ways:

-My dad's a judge, so he will be performing the ceremony.
-We will be using the same location for ceremony and reception.
-I am almost positive I can find a PA that I wont have to pay for and I have all necessary mixing/turntable equipment for Djing.
-We're not into flowers or BS place settings with boring personalized gifts for everyone
-Fiance's best friend is a clothing designer and will be making the wedding dress
-We'll probably be able to have a friend make the cake (or cakes) instead of going to a baker.

This leaves, basically, location and catering. We live in NYC, and have found some helpful suggestions for locations, but how much should I reasonably expect to pay for location and caterer? Is there any way to do it cheaper?

Which is the best buy?

Should I buy a 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom condo? Specifics after the break... Option 1
Asking 149k, down from 239k 8 months ago. 1 Bedroom condo. Great floor plan, brand new renovation. So So area. Nothing really on the horizon to make it jump up. I can afford the payment by myself. Semi Close to a metro

Option 2
Asking 219k, down from 305 a year ago. 2 Bedroom condo. Brand new renovation. So so floor plan (small 2nd bedroom, small living / dinning combo) Great set up for roommates (2 seperate entrances (front and back door) 2 full baths. Just not a ton of living "space". Very close to current job (hopefully be gone soon though!) and closer to the metro. Area is ok, but has more up swing potential. Need a roommate to make the payment comfortable.

Goal - Live in until I either A) can afford somethign better, B) move to a different city. I'd own / rent it for at least 3 years to get the 8k from the gov and possibly hold onto it to start building my property portfolio...

Thoughts? Both of these are in DC. Option 1 is in Brentwood, Option 2 is off consitution over by RFK / Armory Stadium.

After 14 years living in our small farm house a once-agricultural town in Connecticut our family has had to move on. Despite the markets leaning we did make a profit and would like to reinvest it as quickly as possible. As far as what we desire out of a location, we wouldn't like to go any farther north but have no real desire to stay in the state and would consider moving out of New England for the right reasons. We like our space so size is important. We don't need hundreds of acres or even a dozen. We wouldn't like to be too far away from civilization and neighbors are always a good thing to have. The woods are okay but arable land is better. I would like to grow some fruit trees and maybe raise some chickens.

So basically I'm looking for suggestions on where to begin our new property hunt. Let's say we have upwards of $85k available immediately.

Thanks Metafilter, you haven't failed me yet. :)

Where is class gonna be?

Who decides when and where (and which) classes will be held in a typical public, American University? I am frustrated with many aspects of my University's class schedule and have been for years. I want to know more about the typical process for assembling this schedule, specifically when multiple campuses are involved. It's a state school, but not the Big One.

There are whole departments that never hold a single class on my campus (we have 3 different ones). I have been asking around and emailing various people but I have not had any luck in getting answers as to why, and how I can get this changed.

I have been working with the Student Senate, who put me in touch with a Campus Rep. She has not been very forthcoming, and told me I must go to the other campuses. I have told my teachers that I appreciate them holding class on my campus.

Is my adviser the person to ask? Each department head? The Office of the President?

Thanks

Paris for the Tragically Unhip

Where should two young, but not incredibly hip, people stay in Paris for 4 nights? Here's the basic gist, we'll be in Paris for 4 nights (Sept 15th - 19th) and are looking for a good location. Right now we're looking at renting either a hotel or doing one of the apartment rentals, but the biggest issue is location.

The plan is basically standard tourist stuff, we're going to do the Louvre, we're going to do Sacre-Coeur, the Eiffel Tower, etc. So we'd like a location that lets us access those sort of things BUT we would also enjoy a place that has a really good vibe of it's own. We'll probably spend at least a day just wandering where we're at, and for certain will eat breakfast and dinner in the area. Good bars and dancing though? Not really necessary. Good cafe's that are open late are.

Also, one of us speaks some french, but really just enough to say "Hello, I don't speak French."

Iconoclasts need wedding location.

I need to find an outdoor, semi-secluded, kind of non-traditional venue for a summer wedding in Portland. Preferably cheap and public, but private is ok. I've been to the Hoyt Arboretum and their wedding meadow was too meadowy, not garden-like enough. I've considered the Rose Test Gardens, but I was wondering if there are other venues that would fit our desires that I've never considered.

I'm open to places in WA County as well, so it doesn't have to be exclusively Metro. Heck, even someplace down in the Valley would be fine as long as it's not too:
Conventional - no gazebos, arches or other accoutrements associated with the usual wedding.
Difficult to navigate for the disabled - we have elderly relatives that can't handle long distances well, especially over uneven ground.
Expensive - no $1000 a day places, please.

It's can't really explain just how much we really don't want the usual wedding. Needless to say, you'd have to try real hard to convince me to get married in at a vineyard, a B&B or a hotel. I'd like something vaguely park-like or along the line of a managed forest area

Can gunshots be triangulated with sound analysis?

Pinpointing gunshot locations by triangulating sound waves: Would this be technically feasible? Would it be legal? Would it be technically possible, with an array of sound monitoring devices placed on utility poles, to determine the source of loud sounds, such as gunshot reports, by relying on very exact time signatures and possibly volume levels? Would this be super-expensive?

Would it be legal for a city or business to deploy such devices?
