Aimless wandering is one of my preferred pastimes, and finding things locally blends well with this; I have a strong collecting impulse and it's a good way to know an area. But many recreational spins on this - geocaching, Ingress - are too internet-based for my tastes lately, and feel somewhat artificial. So what other things do you find it interesting/useful to go hunting for? All I can think of offhand is edible weeds/plant stands.
My wife has a medium-sized law practice in a specialized practice area. I'm a techie, but more of a developer and pointy haired boss than anyone with super appropriate skills in AdWords. Looking for a good resource to either learn enough to do some basic tweaking of her campaigns or a way to find appropriate professional help. [more inside]
I have an ongoing research project to document and map locations of camp meetings, which originate in 19th century religious revivals. I've mapped more than 50 (listed inside), including some famous ones like Oak Bluffs, MA, Bay View, MI, and Indian Springs, GA, and am now looking for others. I'm interested in three kinds of sites: current active camp-meetings that still operate as a religious camp or revival; "legacy" sites where the camp meeting evolved into a town or incorporated secular association; and defunct sites where a camp once was before being abandoned. Any and all links, vague memories, and coordinates welcome! [more inside]
I'm looking for examples of small-to-medium sized U.S. cities and towns that are known for having exceedingly radical city governments (whether left- or right-wing). What have these governments done that makes them considered radical? What obstacles have they faced in attempting to implement their policies?
I want to get rid of some random stuff in my apt and I've heard of apps like Letgo where you can sell stuff locally but... I'm nervous about actually using it. Has anyone used them and are they legit, or shady? [more inside]
Two years ago, we moved from Maryland to Seattle, WA, but I still feel like I don't know very much about my new home. Ideally, I'm looking for the "here's what you should have learned in 6th grade" level overview of local history and common knowledge. (I might get into deeper history later, but right now I just want to not feel like such a tourist)
(I am posting this for my daughter, and am sending the request as I received it from her, below. She is attending a training conference during the dates listed. She's 34, professional, and quite capable of finding her way around, although she will not be driving, so will need to use public transportation. She has never been to Vegas prior to this trip. She likes all kinds of music, art, cool neighborhoods..woman of eclectic tastes. Tell her what you love about the city!) [more inside]

In 2010, coffeeshops and bookstores (etc.) gave away (for free) cool folded local maps on good, thick paper filled with tips for alterno/artisanal lesser-known shops/restaurants/cafes/bars. The drawing, production, and recommendations were all surprisingly good. There were editions for Chicago, Brooklyn, and, likely, elsewhere. I'm trying to figure out who made them, and whether they're still available. Help?
The lovely boyfriend and I will be in London, UK from 2-9 January for a little R&R. We've both spent a considerable amount of time there over the past few years and so have seen most of the major sites. This time, we're hoping to discover a few things that are a little off the beaten track. [more inside]
In order to block out a new writing thing. I'm looking for things that are essentially or unquiely New Jersian in flavor or references that would ping a lifelong resident of the state- types of stores and houses, idioms, vacation spots, regional foods, etc. I'm also looking for media that has the right feel of the Garden State that aren't Kevin Smith movies. I've read this AskMe about New Jersey books already and I've seen The Sopranos. What are other examples of "Only in NJ" things? [more inside]
I am going to a cabin in Maine for the summer. When I am in this cabin I like to spend many hours cooking and fussing over meals. The fussier the better. Problem: there is no oven. What are your best ovenless recipes suitable for two people in the middle of nowhere with lots of time on thier hands? [more inside]
I was just terminated after 89 days from a job that I moved 550 miles to accept. I have no savings -- they were spent on the move -- and two weeks' severance pay (about $1,300). I have no family or friends in this city. What are my next moves? [more inside]
I'm looking for a website that will let me search for bands using the location they're based in. I remember using a site that let me do this in the past, but I can't find it again for the life of me.

I recently discovered the identity of a long lost relative who is deceased. Apparently he was in and out of prison his whole life for serious crimes. This was in the Atlanta area from the late 50s thru the 80s. Is there any kind of service available that could search local newspapers for articles about his arrests or trials? [more inside]
I work with a small retailer of non-perishable foodstuffs (among other things). Niche and one-of-a-kind product lines—local/craft/boutique, organic, gluten-free, etc.—do quite well here, and we'd like to carry more of the same. [more inside]
Where can I get an iconic Los Angeles-centric coffee mug? [more inside]
I'm in the market for 1 oz, 2 oz, 4 oz and 8 oz bottles, preferably Boston Round glass amber colored bottles. I'd love to find the smaller bottles with orifice reducers (shake-to-drop) and/or droppers in the lids, and phenolic caps for the larger ones. Also neat whimsical labels would be cool but I'd be willing to make those myself and rubber cement them on. Do you have any thoughts on what types local businesses I should check to try to find a place that stocks all of these kinds of bottles and accessories? [more inside]
If you lived in Britain and were coming back from California with an empty suitcase what would you bring back. Are there things that are a) cool b) curious c) ultra useful d) much cheaper e) unique that you would bring. [more inside]

I have been getting annoying and possilby disturbing calls from an old friend. I looked up the number and it's registered as a cell phone with an out of state area code. However, since it is a cell, the person could still be placing those calls from the local area. I called my phone provider and unsuprisingly, they couldn't help. Is there another way to find out the physical location of the caller?

Please help me find a website I used last week that shows you public Facebook events for your city, broken down by date, and - rather uniquely for such websites - lists the confirmed attendees by their self-selected Facebook gender! When you clicked on an event, it would pull up a map, and a list of the attendees, and then give you the option to click through to the Facebook event page. It was such a great resource and it's killing me to not be able to find it anymore!

My best friend is leaving her job at a local, well established physician’s office, and the position could be mine, as I understand it. In my head, there aren’t many downsides, but my SO thinks otherwise. Am I just blocking out major downsides because I feel like I want out of my current job? I feel if I go against my SO’s wishes I’ll never be allowed to have a bad day and rely on him, but I also don’t want to resent him for stopping me from making a switch if I become even more unhappy with my current position in the future. What to do? [more inside]
How can I go off the beaten path in London as a tourist? What are your favorite local spots? [more inside]
Where does one buy disguise makeup stuff? (types of local stores) A mask like the kind from spfxmasks.com (doesn't have to be that good though) would be nice. But really I can make do with a lot less... whatever I can buy in local stores, as I need it soon. But I have no idea what type of store I would buy it at, so I could check the yellowpages and start calling around. This is in Ottawa, anyone know any specific stores here, either? In particular I need a skin colored patch to conceal some distinctive skin features. I actually want to have the disguise on by 2pm today... cut it a bit close I know but the idea did not develop until now...
I will be staying in a rented apartment at 28th St and 2nd Ave in the Kips Bay Area of New York City for a week at the end of April. Can anyone familiar with the area (Kips Bay, Manhattan) orient me to local transportation, fun activities, and good eats? [more inside]
