I've searched around, and it appears the common guideline for considering rent amounts is not to go over one-third of your monthly salary. [more inside]

When I moved into my apartment with my roommate, the manager at the time said we could remove or add roommates as we pleased and could even add a roommate and remove ourselves off the lease completely if we wanted to move away before the lease was up, so long as we notified the manager and signed a form.
I am considering moving out before the lease ends. We now have a new manager and when I checked with her, she says this is not true, that I cannot be removed from the lease at all even if my roommate agrees to it. However, I looked over my lease and it seems to say that I absolutely CAN do that, as long as everyone agrees. (See extended for the exact lease quote.) [more inside]

My wife and I live in an expensive (by non-NYC standards) NYC apartment. Recently, lamenting how much of our salary went down the rent drain, we wondered if we could save money by living in a van. (This is a thought experiment. We're not really planning on doing it.) Is this feasible economically? [more inside]

Me and the significant other are moving out in about 2 weeks time to our first 1 bedroom apartment. Rent is looking about 1/3 of total income including water, gas and trash (not bad for Southern California) and most of our major furniture/appliance costs seems to be taken care of already. Is there anything we should consider, highlight, or otherwise be aware of before we live the life of paupers?

I'm moving to LA soon and have two questions.
First, I have a rental budget of around $1200 to $1500 a month for a one-bedroom (not a studio!). I want to live close enough to enjoy all that LA has to offer but not so close that I have to pay way more for a lot less. Any ideas on areas of town, specific rental agencies, websites, complexes, etc.
Second, is living out there really all that much more expensive than saying living in Houston, Texas for example? Can anyone offer specifics on what costs so much.
