I've got the chance to spend two years doing research work at a university in either Boston or Philadelphia. I've never been to either city, and I can't visit them before deciding. I'm looking for general impressions of what life would be like in each place. (I've posted some other details inside, but because I'm so ignorant of both places, this is pretty free-form...)

I'm living on Long Island, New York, and it is ridiculously expensive here. I'd like to move to some other part of the country that shares its good qualities, but without the exorbitant cost of living. Any suggestions?

Due to my life as a secret agent, I constantly move house. Futon, possessions, toiletries, books, clothes, my entire life. Living out of boxes sucks, and moving loose unboxed items just
sucks. Are there any fancy systems, boxes, thingamajigs that can help?

Me and the significant other are moving out in about 2 weeks time to our first 1 bedroom apartment. Rent is looking about 1/3 of total income including water, gas and trash (not bad for Southern California) and most of our major furniture/appliance costs seems to be taken care of already. Is there anything we should consider, highlight, or otherwise be aware of before we live the life of paupers?
