Back in the proverbial day (2006/2007), the TV channel MHD (later called Palladia, LATER called MTV Live) aired a Gorillaz concert called "Demon Days: Live in Harlem". It was filmed at the Apollo on New Year's Eve, I believe. They performed the Demon Days album straight through, with cartoon visuals. Dennis Hopper narrated one song. I would pay strip club-style SWEATY FISTFULS OF CASH to obtain a decent video of this (digital format is ideal, but DVD is also fine). Any ideas?
What audio or video recordings are available online of concerts where the lead singer/vocalist stops and the audience takes over to sing the lyrics or chorus of a song without them? Any genre. Kid-safe clips without swearing or explicit lyrics, preferred.

I am looking for examples of musical performances in which the performer uses a natural break or pause in the song and stretches it out to the breaking point creating tension for dramatic effect before diving back into the song.
Recently I've been all about Sam Cooke's Live at the Harlem Square Club, Etta James Rocks the House, and James Brown Live at the Apollo. Can you recommend other live soul or R&B recordings that have the same kind of raw energy?

My sister is moving from the UK to the San Francisco area in a few weeks. As a goodbye and good luck present I want to buy her tickets to a pop music concert in/near SF. Her tastes are quite broad, but mainly she likes good old sing-along pop music. [more inside]
We're going to a gig tonight that is massively sold out … and we're on the guest list. Are guest lists completely at the whim of the venue, or are there general guidelines that apply to most venues? We want to enjoy the show, but don't want to be “that guy” who ruins it for those nearby. [more inside]

I'm a drummer in an indie-rock band with a 5-piece kit who is looking to expand my setup to include a drum sampling pad. I want something that has unique percussion sounds (not just cheesy electronic beats), built-in effects, plenty of storage space to upload my own samples, and the ability to record and loop live drumbeats. Any advice? [more inside]

I would like to display Karaoke lyrics over a live webcam feed. This means I might need a skype (or equivalent) plugin that plays the music & lyrics, or find some karaoke software with the ability to display lyrics over a transparent background. (That is, to have windowless karaoke display, and run the webcam feed behind it. ) All the software (I can find) to play .CDG (karaoke lyric standard) files forces them to be played with an image background, or over a video file. The music that everyone at my lab bench most enjoys working to is stuff like Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Justice, etc etc etc. Particularly good are seamlessly mixed live sets. Can anyone recommend any easily obtainable sets from these artists, or similar artists that mightn't be on our radar? We've already exhausted Alive 2007, amazing as it is. The only caveat is no naughty words; everyone was pretty abashed when a senior academic walked by just as SUCK MY DICK / AIN'T THAT SOME SHIT was blasting.

Ableton Live for beginners: This weekend I'm going to have a couple of days where I get to play with someone's copy of Live, which looks like a very cool piece of software. I'm hoping to make the most of this chance but (a) the last time I made electronic music I programmed SID registers by hand in 6510 assembler in the 80s, and (b) don't know diddly about Live, oh yes, and (c) I don't know diddly about music, either. Is there a decent guide -- in print or online -- that would help me sit down in front of the thing and maybe plink out a couple of really awful songs? [more inside]

I'm trying to figure out which party to take to small claims court or if i should take both. The band i play in was hired to play at a bar by a promoter we have worked with before. At the end of the night there was no check and still is no check. We have sent a demand payment letter to both club owner and promoter and both claim they are not responsible for paying us. Do we sue both or just the club owner ?
Long shot: Anyone know what site this was? It's an old musician, kinda kenny rogers looking, who used to be moderately big I think, but now has people play at his house and films it. It's kind of like La Blogotheque, but american. [more inside]

Where to go to see Live Music in Sydney? Given I'm into music, I really should know this but I don't tend to get out and see live music much. I have some friends from overseas who have tasked me with finding something on Saturday night. I'm looking for something that won't be so loud you can't talk to each other, isn't necessarily a cram everyone in to dance kind of place, possibly some jazz or latino style music. Usually I would go to the basement, but they are doing some Pink Floyd tribute which isn't my thing at all. I was thinking maybe vivaz at the rocks, but last time I was there it was a bit sleazy. The only other thing I can come up with is a gig by Chris McNulty at the Seymour Centre, but I have no idea what kind of music that is (other than jazz). Any other suggestions? Close to the city would be nice, but I'm open to ideas.
Where do we eat Thanksgiving dinner out, traditional style, under $30 per person in Portland, Oregon; family of 4 adults. Bonus points for live music of any kind, and/or great ambiance/view. We're familiar with Portland, and would love to use public transport rather than drive...we'll be staying in Rose Garden district, walking distance to light rail.
I have my first show coming up. My first show will be an admittedly lame DJ set where I pretty much just play one song after the other...if I had more time I would try to come up with something more interesting, but any suggestions for making this performance not so boring? [more inside]
