I'm a drummer in an indie-rock band with a 5-piece kit who is looking to expand my setup to include a drum sampling pad. I want something that has unique percussion sounds (not just cheesy electronic beats), built-in effects, plenty of storage space to upload my own samples, and the ability to record and loop live drumbeats. Any advice?

I would like to display Karaoke lyrics over a
live webcam feed. This means I might need a skype (or equivalent) plugin that plays the music & lyrics,
or find some karaoke software with the ability to display lyrics over a transparent background. (That is, to have windowless karaoke display, and run the webcam feed behind it. )
All the software (I can find) to play
.CDG (karaoke lyric standard) files forces them to be played with an image background, or over a video file.

The music that everyone at my lab bench most enjoys working to is stuff like Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Justice, etc etc etc. Particularly good are seamlessly mixed live sets. Can anyone recommend any easily obtainable sets from these artists, or similar artists that mightn't be on our radar? We've already exhausted Alive 2007, amazing as it is. The only caveat is no naughty words; everyone was pretty abashed when a senior academic walked by just as SUCK MY DICK / AIN'T THAT SOME SHIT was blasting.

Ableton Live for beginners: This weekend I'm going to have a couple of days where I get to play with someone's copy of Live, which looks like a very cool piece of software. I'm hoping to make the most of this chance but (a) the last time I made electronic music I programmed SID registers by hand in 6510 assembler in the 80s, and (b) don't know diddly about Live, oh yes, and (c) I don't know diddly about music, either. Is there a decent guide -- in print or online -- that would help me sit down in front of the thing and maybe plink out a couple of really awful songs?

I'm trying to figure out which party to take to small claims court or if i should take both. The band i play in was hired to play at a bar by a promoter we have worked with before. At the end of the night there was no check and still is no check. We have sent a demand payment letter to both club owner and promoter and both claim they are not responsible for paying us. Do we sue both or just the club owner ?

Where to go to see Live Music in Sydney? Given I'm into music, I really should know this but I don't tend to get out and see live music much. I have some friends from overseas who have tasked me with finding something on Saturday night.
I'm looking for something that won't be so loud you can't talk to each other, isn't necessarily a cram everyone in to dance kind of place, possibly some jazz or latino style music. Usually I would go to the basement, but they are doing some Pink Floyd tribute which isn't my thing at all.
I was thinking maybe vivaz at the rocks, but last time I was there it was a bit sleazy. The only other thing I can come up with is a gig by Chris McNulty at the Seymour Centre, but I have no idea what kind of music that is (other than jazz).
Any other suggestions? Close to the city would be nice, but I'm open to ideas.

We're familiar with Portland, and would love to use public transport rather than drive...we'll be staying in Rose Garden district, walking distance to light rail.

I'm taking a holiday from around the 25th of July for 5 weeks to the UK, France and Germany. As well as doing plenty of sightseeing, I'd love to see some great live music by some bands/DJs that might not make it to Australia for a few years. Being in Melbourne, and having never been to the UK before, I have no idea about what source to go to, to find out what festivals or gigs by bands/DJs are coming up. Melburnians know to check their local street press, where do the Brits go to find out all their music news?
Please recommend some great websites for news, reviews and schedules. Anything with an RSS feed would be awesome, but I'm not worried if it doesn't have one.
A poke around in google found
www.virtualfestivals.com which seems to be good for festivals, but not much for gigs. Not like the usual street press that I'm used to reading.
I had the thought to go to Reading/Leeds Festivals or Creamfields, but I think they might already be sold out. I also have no idea where to buy tickets from. Are there major ticket agencies to head to? Is ebay a good option?
Also, any thoughts, recommendations or live music experiences for festivals, gigs or venues are more than welcome!
Thanks!
