I'm going through a spreadsheet or a hand written list which requires me to check off each item as it's completed (common boring, repetitive work). I find that the process of switching back to that original list and checking/crossing out/deleting each item as it's done is the most time consuming part due to the context switch (having to move your eyes to a different interface/screen/paper). Are there any tricks (ruling out additional data entry to consolodate the data into a single interface) to minimize or eliminate this inefficiency?

I'm looking for help in finding good examples of interest surveys for social sites that match a user to a group/other users based on interest survey results (very much like StumbleUpon process but its focused on matching sites I might like). I'm looking for best practices, too, to decide on hierarchy structure (what is a considered a top level and second level category). [more inside]

So I'm a fan of movies. A little over a year ago I watched the top 100 of IMDB's top 250. I enjoyed almost all of them. I've since looked through many other lists, but I can't decide if any of them are worth working through (although I have seriously considered the writer's guild's top 100 screenplays).
Are there any other lists out there that any of you have enjoyed? Are there any I should particularly avoid?

Assume you had a list of different animal species, and you wanted to order it from most intelligent species to least. (1) What measure of intelligence would you use to compare different species--average number of neurons, for example, or ability to solve certain kinds of tests? Or something else entirely? (2) Can you give some examples of how some common farm, food, or pet animals might rank on the list? [more inside]

I there such a thing as a global best-sellers list? Every country has a very detailed best-sellers list, generally on a weekly basis, but is there a real global list, or at least a compedium of all lists from the world? Do I have any way to know, for example, if Ian McEwan's Saturday was a best-seller in Brazil or in Greece?

Better to-do list for Palm OS? The bult-in "tasks" is good for singular, date-based items, but is there anything similar to Ta-da Lists for the Palm? For no particular reason, I am looking to compile a list of what people consider to be the best history books available. I'm looking for non-fiction, but I'll take anything. I am particularly interested in the opinion of people who've studied history at a graduate level, but if you're just an armchair historian, like myself, I still want to hear what you have to say. What (preferably good) songs shift back and forth between fast and slow? I'm trying to put together an iPod playlist for a workout that goes back and forth between slow, steady jogging and spurts of sprinting. (Yeah, I know--I could just alternate slow songs and fast songs--but then the tempo would only shift every 3 minutes or so.) All genres are welcome, although I have a slight bias towards either jazz/swing or indie rock for this particular mix.

Librarianfilter: My girlfriend is "wondering if anyone could recommend good websites containing lists/reviews for educational books/videos/software for children (ages 5 up through high school)? I recently acquired the responsibility of selecting materials (I'm a librarian) for our University's Educational Resource Center and don't have an education background so I'm new to this. I know about the Parent's Choice Foundation. I was wondering if there is something similar for librarians/educators? I get tons of catalogs but want lists/reviews, preferably online. Thanks!"

Because I only know pidgin HTML, I'm not sure if what I'm about to ask is Web Design 101 or Web Design 665, but: If I want to have a collapsible list, such that if someone clicked on "Words that start with B" in the following:
Words that start with A
Words that start with B
Words that start with C
the page would then reformat to show
Words that start with A
Words that start with B
balustrade
brickbat
bumptious
Words that start with C
without the whole page having to reload. Can someone please point me to a resource or study-able example?
