Where to Post My Job Listing

Is there a job listing site for quirkier sorts of (part time) jobs, attracting brighter, more artsy workers? I need to hire someone for well-paid part time work that's a unique hybrid: helping organize a house (catalog possessions, research value of items, create craigslist/ebay listings or transport to donation drop-offs....and organize photos and send to photo scanning service after researching optional add-ons, etc etc) and also assist with writing and web ventures I'm currently developing (i.e. editing, brainstorming, opining; generally being a savvy muse).

So I need someone smart, energetic, competent, very organized and with a good eye for writing and good taste, generally. And a "driven" approach to completing projects and tasks (i.e. bring energy to the work and not rely on me to always direct and motivate). It will pay pretty well.

I was going to use Craigslist, but their help wanted ads are for a whole other universe of worker (plus, I can't imagine which of their categories this would fit into) so I'm not sure I'd find my target person that way. Here's the problem: in a recession, everyone's digging eagerly for work, so I don't want to cast my net in waters populated by the wrong sort of fish....and face a monstrous winnowing job.

There are artsy-but-smart-and-organized types out there who could use this work. How do I connect with them? Is there a job listing site attracting this sort of person ? Or a general purpose notice board? Or are there offline routes to take?

If McSweeney's accepted classified ads, that'd be perfect...

Restaurant ethical certification?

How can I find out what restaurants (or other stores) treat their employees well? There are periodic scandals about restaurant owners keeping tips, bullying the staff, not feeding their employees all day, etc. And I've heard this sort of thing can be well-known in the business - waiters know which other restaurants stiff their employees, etc. How does someone not in the industry get this information? Is there a website anywhere with this information - the equivalent of "Rate Your Professor" for waitstaff? Is there some sort of 'ethical treatment' certification around, or list of 'best places to work'? Something with a more general bent would be useful too, for stores other than restaurants. I'm looking primarily to figure out what places I would want to support with my business, so rules of thumb are appreciated too.

In case it makes a difference, I'm located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Thanks for your help!

I want my film listed on IMDb.

I want my film listed on IMDb. I've tried and failed. The title gets lost in a dead letter office while I'm supposed to come up with "relevant information" without being told what information that could be. My film is, of course, a low-budget horror movie that has never been screened nationally on television or at a film festival, but it has been shown over forty times around the country and is for sale online. I know of filmmakers who have their crappy movies listed on the site before they are even finished, so there must be something I can do.

This previous question didn't seem to yield a solution. Anyone have any ideas?

How can I get out of a listed house in order to sell it For Sale By Owner?

I have a rental house that I am selling.

It has been listed with a Real Estate agent since Nov 07. Not one offer on it.
Some people from my parent's church are interested in buying it, but they want to do it For Sale By Owner -no Real Estate Agents involved.

My listing expires on Oct. 11.

How long after the listing expires can I sell it on my own? Is there a grace period?

Any ideas of how to cancel the listing beforehand? I don't want to lie, but I would rather sell to the church people for obvious reasons (more money for me, better deal for them, etc.).

I am in GA.

Why is Apache not listing any files in an open directory?

I've been helping my friend setup his personal website and we have been muddling through with plenty of help from google and a little bit of luck.

But recently, I've been stumped by a persistent problem with a directory containing some files. Here's the scenario - my friend shares his RSS reading list as an OPML file. In addition, he wants to try and show how his reading list has evolved by archiving older versions of his reading list in a folder. He also wants to allow other people to browse this archive folder.

It seemed like we should be able to achieve this using .htaccess files, but unfortunately it's not working like we expected. The .htaccess file that we came up with is as follows:

Options +Indexes +MultiViews +FollowSymlinks
<ifmodule>
IndexOptions FancyIndexing
</ifmodule>

order allow,deny
allow from all

The directory can be viewed at this link. At first I thought it might be a problem with file permissions, so I tried CHMOD'ing all files to 777 but the folder remains empty. Next, I tried to see if any file was getting displayed and uploaded a text file and a jpeg to the directory and found that nothing changes. So it isn't a problem with unrecognized file types, nothing is getting picked up!

In the root folder of the linkblog, there is a htaccess file that has the following entry:

# BEGIN Prevent Directory Listing
IndexIgnore *
# END Prevent Directory Listing

I tried to force an override by including an Override Indexes command as follows:

< Directory "/home/content/linkblog/resources/opml_archive" >
AllowOverride Indexes

That only resulted in a "500 Internal Server Error".

Additional info: The server is hosted at GoDaddy.

If the question seems long and rambly, apologies - this is my first question to AskMeFi and I figured it's better to go overboard with the data points :)

What should my eBay listing schedule be for my products? (free HDMI cable to best answer if allowed) I have recently started selling HDMI cables on Amazon.com as well as on my own site. I have done my research and I can be the lowest priced seller on eBay while still making a decent profit.

I need help choosing a selling schedule that will attract buyers while maximizing sales. Should I list every hour? every half-hour, only at night?

Any help is appreciated, and If it is acceptable under Metafilter rules I will mail a free 2M HDMI cable out to the answer that I deem the best. Thanks --Adam

How to get out of a listing agreement in Ontario

Can someone who knows about Ontario real estate listing agreements help a homebuying n00b? Here's the sitch:

A friend owns a house that I've been taking care of since he moved away. He was trying to sell privately, but his price was too high, and has finally dropped the price to the point where it's in line with the current sketchy market. In the meantime, however, my wife and I have fallen in love with the house -- and, it's now in a price range that we can afford.

The problem is this: he has now listed it with an agent. I know that as soon as I mention to him that we're interested, he'll be wanting to get out of the listing agreement and sell privately, because we had actually not-too-seriously inquired about the house before. Bluntly, he'd rather sell for a lower price to a friend, and not have to pay the realtor commission. And, he would rather someone he knows -- and who knows how much work went into fixing it up -- get the house.

His current exclusive listing agreement runs out on Feb. 15, and has a 90 day holding period. My question is, does the agreement become null if he takes it off the market before the 15th of Feb? If so, how long until he can sell it privately? (We never spoke with the agent about the house, so there is no problem with commission on that front) We're trying to figure out what dates we're looking at to finish the deal if we decide to go ahead. If he attempts to cancel the agreement for nonperformance (there are a few things that weren't done that would likely justify this), what timeframes are we looking at?

Any help at all would be most graciously appreciated. We're not trying to hoodwink the realtor necessarily, but don't want to see him get a commission for selling to someone who knew about -- and was interested in -- the house long before he ever listed it.

Do we really need 300 music categories?

Is 300 categories (give or take a few) too many for an online music listing? We are putting together a new music centered website. The chief music editor submitted a list of 300 categories for the site to sort music by. Some of us think the size of the list is too big, others think it's ok.

The site is a music directory that lists upcoming shows in on a weekly basis, in a smallish midwestern town (about 200,000 in the area). The editor admits that some of the generes, such a NYC Punk or Jangle-Pop rarely come through town, but his thinking is that it's important that we list when they do. We agree and think putting a small blurb with the listing will cover that. The editor says he can't do that, as it's time consuming on a weekly basis and he'd prefer to be able to list one of these 300 categories instead of writing a blurb.

What do you think? Should we have so many categories or is it overkill?

Trying to get website visibility

I'm trying to get a new phpBB forum going, and I can't figure out how to begin getting word out. I have a few questions. Short story is I just started a phpBB forum dedicated to e-commerce, the forum itself being non-commercial with no ads, banners, or shilling. Some e-commerce forums do exist out there but they hang on the coattails of larger forums. Having run several large phpBB boards for years and being deeply in e-commerce myself, I think the prospects for my forum are quite good. My goals are later to bring in some ad revenue, but my immediate interest is in running a good quality forum.

The problem is I "built it", but no one can see it. It's in Google now but since e-commerce and similar phraseology is spammed all to hell, I don't have a chance of getting a decent page rank.

I don't think I can go to the other forums and 'advertise' there, as that would be in bad taste. Besides, I want to build up my users from scratch rather than try to get people to defect.

So the main things I'd like to know are:

1. How long does it take to get added in directories such as Yahoo, dmoz, and Google? In your experience; not what they claim. I've had bad luck in past years submitting other [worthy] sites to them; Yahoo takes forever and dmoz says they'll get around to it when an editor looks at it (which is sometimes never).

2. Are there other directories I should look at?

3. What are some good (current and active) webrings I should start with?

And a more philosophical question:

4. What are the issues of perhaps scrapping the forum and going to a blog? Is it easier to get indexed and seen this way? Certainly I know that MeFi links to lots of blogs; almost never does a forum get FPPd.

Any other suggestions are appreciated from people who have worked through a similar situation.
