How can I listen to more Cuban Spanish content?

I would like to relatively quickly train my ear to understand spoken Spanish better, especially Cuban Spanish. I'm a little past the "News in Slow Spanish" phase of language learning. Are there any podcasts, audiobooks, radio shows, movies produced by Cubans or Cuban emigres that I can listen to? Ideally, with subtitles or a written transcription that I can follow along with? How to listen without offering solutions?

I'm in a relationship for the first time in a few years. When my girlfriend comes to me with problems or things that are bothering her, I'm intellectually aware that she's not looking for solutions or fixes unless she asks, she's looking for understanding and empathy. However, I'm just not practiced providing that kind of emotional support and often find myself at a loss for words. How do I do it? [more inside]

Communication is too hard. I almost want to stop speaking altogether.

Respecting religious differences in emotionally charged conversations?

I'm an atheist. I don't wear this fact on my sleeve. Most of the time, I actively avoid religion as a conversational topic. There are some conversations, however, where you can't duck the topic, because you're providing support to someone who has experienced a personal tragedy, such as the death of a loved one, and in the course of that conversation, they will invoke their religious beliefs. The question I am posing is: how can I provide emotional support and maintain proper boundaries while respecting their beliefs and my own as well?

My husband won't listen to me talk about work

My husband completely shuts down when I talk to him about problems I'm having at work. This is the only topic of conversation that he automatically shuts down, in two minutes or fewer. It has been ongoing, and I feel like I have to lie and say work is "fine" when he asks, or just swallow up my negative feelings. What's going on here? [more inside]

What do you listen to on your amateur radio or scanner?

Having just earned my amateur radio license, I've purchased a handheld transceiver with decent wide-band coverage and I'm trying to figure out what I should program into it. I've added the nearest repeaters on my licensed bands, but what's worthwhile to add next? What else do people program on their mobiles, HTs, and scanners? I'd like to find active and interesting channels to monitor when I'm not conversing with someone myself. [more inside]

If Podcasts Were Hot Dogs, I'd Be Kobayashi

I spend 10+ hours per week commuting, 40+ hours wearing headphones at work (open-plan office: boo!), and ANOTHER 5+ hours wearing headphones at the gym. As such, I plow through an absolutely obscene volume of podcasts. I'd like some recommendations for more (lest I be forced to spend even a single second alone with my thoughts). Tips/strategies/advice to improve my intermediate Spanish?

Do you have suggestions for the best ways to improve my intermediate-level Spanish, take advantage of immersion here in Argentina for the next few months, and ease up on anxiety/overthinking when speaking so I can be more fluid and fluent? My top priority for improvement is listening comprehension, followed by clarity, speed/fluidity, and confidence in speaking. [more inside]

Nudging the S.O. toward the Pro-Social

My sweet, slightly socially awkward boyfriend is about to meet my parents. When he's nervous or excited, he tends to talk a mile a minute and fill all silences with chatter, sometimes talking over others, or monologuing, or butting in before someone is really done speaking. Is there any way I can gently, er, make this stop? [more inside]

feed my ears, my eyes are busy

I need recommendations for TV shows, audiodramas and audiobooks that I can really sink my teeth into. I'm asking for both in the same question because I need to be able to listen to the TV and still catch most everything; this is stuff I want to have on while I'm doing stuff with my hands. Focus Interruptus

I'm in a new relationship, long distance. We skype almost daily. Often, mid-convo, I can tell his attention is on something else. Turns out he's flipping through Reddit. This makes me feel hurt, b/c he's not listening to me. When I suggest we end the convo and talk the next day, he says, "No, no! I'm done! I'm done!" Then I feel like a nagging mom, policing his behavior. What should I do? [more inside]

Need great songs about listening!

A friend is organising an event about protecting children from child abuse. Most cases where a child dies from abuse or is significantly harmed show a lack of professionals actually listening to the child - this event is to encourage agencies working with these children to listen more and listen better. She needs music (for background, as people are arriving and in between speakers) with a message of listening and hearing. There's lots of promising song titles out there but most are obviously about lost loves. Can anybody recommend some great songs which may fit the bill? Bonus points for songs likely to be familiar in the UK!

Spock loves Kirk but fails miserably as Troi

Dear Vulcan Homeworld, I want to learn how to converse better with my wife. Currently my overly-logical thought and speech patterns upset her, frequently in ways I'm unable even to predict. She deserves better. I've struggled on my own to come up with dozens of different approaches, all of which have ultimately failed in different ways, so I come to you for help. [more inside]

How can I be a better writer? My value at work would increase if my ability to write formally improves. 70's and 80's songs to play in a business.

What are some good 70's and 80's songs suitable for playing in a pharmacy? My father owns a family pharmacy and we have an iPod with nice 70's and 80's songs set to play for the customers. Can you tell me some that I can add to the playlist? Remember nice calm easy listening ones are best, and no dirty or bad songs about dying etc.. To get an idea of some of the songs I have here's a link to the playlist so far. Specific songs are great, but I will also take artists. Try not to give duplicates. If 10 people give 10 songs that's 100 new songs! Thanks!

Do you "read" an audio book?

I'm new to audio books. After I've listened to a book, can I say that I've "read" the book? What's the common parlance? Or must I draw a distinction between the books I've read and those I've heard? Why or why not? (And what about Braille? Are blind people said to have "read" books?)
