Does all freshly-distilled spirit, whether made from barley, corn, rye, grapes, or potatoes taste identical? If not, what makes the difference in taste? I know that whiskey gets a lot of its final taste from the sherry barrels in which it is aged. Are similar tricks used for other spirits?

A few months ago I received a metal cocktail shaker as a gift. The first time I used it with ice, the top and bottom became welded together, presumably because the cold caused the metal to expand. Fast forward to the present -- they're still stuck fast, and I'm sick of gin and tonics. How can I get them apart and get back to mixologizing? [more inside]

I wanted to buy (at some point) a really, really expensive bottle of liquor or wine (no Champagne). The idea was to hold on to it for a very long time until one day something so important happens in my life that I deem it worthy to drink the alcohol in celebration. Any suggestions on what to get?

I like to drink, but I don't like alcohol. Or at least the taste of it. I never have, but lately, I haven't been able to drink much at all. I can detect even small amounts and have been known to grimace when drinking even a wimpy drink. But I love to party, and as a big guy, it takes a lot to get me drunk. Any ideas on dealing with this problem? [more inside]
