I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. My system is set up to use NIS and autofs. I am able to login and get to nfs-mounted filesystems w/o problem. However my login is just reporting one group membership (as per the 'id' command) whereas it should be reporting 15. I've found that if I su to myself ('su - luge') then all the groups appear. I've also found that if I ssh to another system and ssh back to my system then I only get one group, but if I ssh to another system and *telnet* back to my system then all the groups appear. I've also found that the getgroups(0, NULL) syscall behaves accordingly, returning 1 or 15 depending on the above. Is this some kind of process inheritance issue?

Looking for a community/forum where I can learn more about networking, code, security, and OS-independent CS topics
I'm looking for a forum where I can ask questions about networking, security, coding, operating systems, web design, etc. There are many of these out there, but I'd like to find a single community which covers all these topics more or less equally (so it isn't a Linux forum with a small section on BSD, or a coding forum with a small section on networking). I'd like it to be the sort of forum where users stay around for several years as they learn and contribute at different levels, with high literacy and education-to-spam levels. Could I have your recommendations please?

My semi-senile older friend needs a computer just for email and web, but keeps messing with Windows cfgs, viruses, spam etc. a support nightmare/comedy. Is there a recommended Linux or Windows distrib for a 5-year old PC, that stays the same with every reboot, support for web and email only, prevents messing with OS, and remote support ability?
I need help selecting an external hard drive that will work to backup a linux with some rather large files on it and still be usable with a mac for occasional data storage. I'd like it to be at least 2 TB and vaguely reasonable in price. I've tried just searching for a hard drive online, but there seems to be some Mac and Linux specific things (or at least used to be) that may cause me problems, so I thought I'd ask for some guidance.

I run a couple of django-based websites/webapps. What OS should I use for my VPS? The most important thing is security and easy installation of packages (including dependencies). I also prefer a system that is easy to maintain. Security is more important, but if all else is equal I would specifically love something with easy to make init-scripts. I know I can install third party packages to do just about anything, but I prefer a batteries-included approach if it exists. [more inside]
Is there a public test Windows XP machine online somewhere I can remote into with rdesktop and tsclient? I am trying to see how it is going to look and work when I remote into work machines on this Ubuntu box, but these are not yet set up. Other Windows are fine too. [more inside]

I am learning in college about setting up and configuring Slackware Linux and I am looking for a newbie friendly book. Areas covered includes FTP, telnet, Samba, NFS, Email, port mappers/scanners. While there are certainly many books out there, Slackware appears to be a fair bit different from most other debian and redhat based distros so I am not sure about a) what would be a good book and b) a book that is relevant for Slackware Linux. Could anyone suggest an excellent book suitable for Slackware and covering these networking areas in newbie friendly terms. Many thanks!
