Best avi to DVD for linux?

I have some avi files that I want to turn into a video DVD that is watchable with a standard DVD player. Here's the catch-- I want to do it using Ubuntu. What's the easiest way to do it? [more inside]

need advice on fixing hd partitions

Had a motherboard failure and it affected the hard drive. Big partition is missing and the drive is displayed as much smaller than it actually is. I don't care about the data, but I'd like to use the hard drive again at its normal capacity. [more inside]

Linux meltdown

Linux meltdown! Catastropic crash and the kernel didn't survive. I can't mount anything from the HD in rescue mode. Is there a program that will let me pick over the ruins and retrieve 12 gigs of mp3s (including some rare Clash bootlegs that I can never ever find again!)? [more inside]
