Abraham Lincoln is tired in this poem.

PoemFilter: They exhumed the bones of Lincoln in order to re-inter him elsewhere, and the former president spoke of being tired, tired of the packing and unpacking and packing again. Do you know the poem? I recall reading many years ago a poem that was written by a witness to the final exhumation of Lincoln's body, which occurred during the process of moving his grave. The author recounts a soliloquy by Lincoln, during which he says that he is tired. It has been thirty years since I read the poem, but I would love to share it with my own children if I can find it.

Does it ring a bell for anyone?

How did Lincoln talk?

I want to learn what everyday conversation (vocabulary, speech patterns, etc.) among American social and political elites was like around the time of the US Civil War. Where should I look for this sort of information? Online sources would be great. Thanks!

My girlfriend is in Lincoln, Nebraska on a business trip and is looking for a good wine shop to recommend a bottle or two of something interesting that she can't get back home in Montreal. The selection of wine (both domestic and imported) in major US centres easily outstrips that of anywhere in Canada. The question is, what does a small town in Nebraska have to offer?

The g/f hasn't got much useful help from her Nebraskan branch coworkers, so I put the question to you, as to whether there is a good place to buy wine in Lincoln and where it would be? She aims to go shopping tomorrow while her fellow Montrealers hit up the outlet stores.

Power Window Power

Can anyone with classic car restoration experience help me with a strange electrical problem that I'm having with a 1961 Lincoln Continental? This car came with a feature where by the rear power windows would descend about an inch or two upon initial opening in order that they clear the deployed soft top. When shut, the window would then re-extend itself into the fully closed position. There's a pin switch in the door frame that, when the open door allows the spring tension to close the switch, a relay in the trunk is energized and the window motor is activated. There's a limiting mechanism in the door that cuts power to the motor after the window has descended the correct amount. When the door is shut, it actuates the pin switch again, and the motor scrolls the window up until the limiting mechanism de-energizes the motor to prevent it from running constantly.

At least that's what I can gather.

Only, this neat feature doesn't work with any consistancy. I know that the circuit is correctly wired and intact because it works SOMETIMES. I can hear the fist-sized antique relays clunking away in the trunk and I can consistanty operate the windows using the conventional switches. I can even sometimes roll the window down a little bit with the conventional switch and then actuate the pin switch in the door frame and watch the window roll up, like it's supposed to.

So there must be some problem with the limiting mechanism, right? Can anyone in MeFiLand lend me some insight or point me towards a (free or really inexpensive) resource that would shed some light on this for me?

Help me scalp the scalpers

Coast of Utopia, in New York City. Tickets? So, it was fairly easy to find tickets for parts one and two of the Stoppard trilogy in Lincoln Center, NYC. The third part opens January 30 and there is not a single ticket left. Ticketmaster claims it is sold out. Word of mouth claims scalpers rushed in. In any case, how can one get tickets for the last part? Where is a scalper near me? How does the scalpering system work?

How famous was Booth before he killed Lincoln?

How famous was John Wilkes Booth before he shot Lincoln? I recognize the difficulty of historical comparative fame, but how well known was Booth before he assassinated Lincoln?

Most accounts call Booth a "famous stage actor" and leave it at that. I'm curious to know how well known that would have made him. Famous among Shakespeare enthusiasts in the Chesapeake Bay, or known by the masses in the hinterlands? Would people hearing the news of Lincoln's death have recognized the name of his killer?

What are your thoughts on Lincoln NB?

What are your thoughts on Lincoln, NB? I'm 30, I'm liberal, I'm cool, I loved living in Portland, OR. I don't go clubbing, I like indie rock and dive bars, while not a vegetarian, I like veggie options and good food all around. Would Lincoln work out or am I setting myself up for disaster by thinking of going there for a PhD program at UNL?

Parking with Peace of Mind

Help! I need to know where it's safe to park in Lincoln Park, Chicago. The last time I rented a car... The last time I rented a car, I woke up early to feed the meter only to find it towed when I went back out a couple of hours later. (doubtful that there was a full 2 inches of snow...) There are signs everywhere and each one seems to be a trap that requires careful dodging. Does anyone have any resources or tips so that I can park with peace of mind? I'll be visiting mid May from Thursday to Monday- fyi, just in case they have rules for every month AND day of the week. Do I need permits or stickers? One friend told me that there are areas where the W-E streets are safe and the N-S streets are free for towing. How is anyone supposed to know that?!? I'm grateful for any help you can give. The more specific the better. You can even suggest sections of certain streets that are safe and at what times etc. All info is welcome. Thank you Mefites and particularly Chicago/ LP Mefites!

Emancipation Proclamation

CivilWarTriviaFilter. This was a question on a 'Millionaire' I recently watched, and it's been driving me nuts. There are *two* signatures on the Emancipation Proclamation: Lincoln's, of course, but also that of his Secretary of State, William Seward.

What I want to know is why. The Proclamation was a document dealing with domestic affairs. Why would the Secretary of State sign it, rather than, say, my guess, which was Stanton, the Secretary of War (since it only applied to where the Union Army occupied states in rebellion.) Google only confirms Seward's signature, not the reason.
