Sooooo.... at what point does Ma Bell flip out, and how does this manifest?

You are now old enough to....?

Make the birthday cards I send to other people more interesting. What kind of cool, random stuff are you legally old enough to do at different ages? When I was a teenager, one of the things I most enjoyed hearing on my birthday was all the crazy sheet that I was legally allowed to do for the first time (this was much more fun than being told all the things Napoleon and Mozart had achieved when they were the same age).

I didn't want to hear "Happy Eighteen, buy some beer." What I wanted was stuff like:

"Happy 16th - you are now entitled to buy a longbow"
"Happy 18th - You are now able to buy scrap metal. Don't abuse the privilege"

These are made up (maybe scrap metal is true? I'm so old I have forgotten what people actually said to me), but I want true examples. I have a bunch of friends with birthdays coming up (they are reaching their 22-25 years). It would be useful to know if there are any cool things I can mention in my cards to them,. Obviously the amount of new stuff declines sharply as you move beyond your teenage years, but there must be a few things worth hearing.

I'm based in England but I'd like to hear age-restrictions from any country (e.g. if you lived in France, you would now be old enough to breed horses). Also, anything for any age, even if it is outside my friends' age bracket (e.g. you must be over 65 to Prime Minister of Japan, 5 year olds can vote in Paraguay) would be good to know - might come in handy if I widen the age range of my friends or, God forbid, if my friend group ever gets older or anyone has kids. I'm also interested if there is something cool you are forbidden from doing when you reach a certain age. I look forward to hearing suggestions!

decimal points in placing limit orders on stocks

Why doesn't Questrade let me place Limit Orders on stocks beyond two decimal points, when on these same stocks they display the price wth 4 decimal points? For example, I wanted to place a Buy Limit Order on a stock, and entered a limit price of 1.1533. The order was rejected, but a order at 1.16 was accepted.

They display the current price at 1.1533, so why couldn't I BUY it at 1.1533?

Limit, stop, stop-limit on the TSX with Questrade

I am having trouble contacting Questrade to ask them this question, and am hoping someone familiar with TSX trading rules can answer this for me: I bought shares at 45 dollars. If the price of my stock is 60 dollars right now (and going up), and I want to put a stop (or stop-limit) at 57 dollars because I am afraid there is some bad news coming and the stock will plummet suddenly, when the actual price reaches 57, it should trigger my order and sell, right?

However, apparently, on the TSX, stop orders are not allowed, but stop-limits are, but the limit price has to be set equal to the stop price.

1) What is the practical difference, then, between a Stop and a Stop-Limit order if TSX forces the limit price to be set equal to the stop price?

2) If issuing a Stop-Limit on the TSX, will the order be sent to the market when the stock price reaches the value I set for stop/limit, or will it send the order to the market right away because it is not purely a stop order, but actually a stop-limit?

3) What happens if, at the end of the day, the price is still at 60 dollars, but during after hours trading it hits 57, and continues to go down, say to 50 dollars. And then, the next morning, it opens at 50. Does my order get triggered at 50 and that's the price I end up selling at?

Thank you!

Running into Ruby Restriction

In Ruby, how can you get around the ~65,500 character limit when grabbing a web page? I'm new to Ruby, but have started to use it to scrape information from websites. I have been using either the Hpricot package or net:http. Unfortunately, when I've tried using these to scrape larger web pages, the streams cut off after 65,500 characters. I haven't found any information online about this. Is there a way to get around this limit? Can you separate the stream over two arrays or strings? Or will I have to manage the stream myself with new code?

How do I limit/moniter net usage?

How do I monitor and/or limit Internet usage? I'm allowed 20GB up+down per month with my ISP. I get charged extra fees for everything over and above that. My ISP gives me access to my total online, but that doesn't help me find out who has used how much. It also lags behind by a day, so if someone uses a couple GB in a day, I only find out after the fact. How can I track and/or limit how much each device is using?

Currently, I've got a Linksys WRT600N router that I would like to keep on stock firmware (it is serving files via the usb port, which DD-WRT cannot completely do yet), a D-Link 524 802.11g router, and a low powered dual core Intel Ubuntu box running MythTV which might be able to take over routing duties (if it doesn't slow down the media watching, I don't encode anything there).

I'd rather not have another computer running 24/7, so IPCop is out.

Invenstment - Option Orders

I have traded stock Options for a while but would like to have the following order type:

Example - Option Price = 3.90
Put in a order to sell if price goes below 3.50 or sell if price goes above 4.50

I have looked at stop, stop limit, limit, trailing and the works, but is there a technical name for what I want, and do brokers offer it?

Thanks!

Page view limit exceeded why?

This page (a website for public domain scores) tells me that my daily allotment of download page visits (2 per day per IP, I imagine) has been exceeded the first time I go to one of those pages. I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.14 on OS X 10.5.1. I mostly want to know if it is browser behavior, such as pre-caching of pages. I don't think any other problem is within my power to resolve.

An additional note is that this page has worked for me before, but not for about a week. I'm not sure if this coincides with an update or not.

When a writing contest puts a maximum of "500 words" for story length, should the count include "a" "an" or "the"? How about other three-or-less lettered words -- are they excluded? Something in my memory wants me to think I should only count words 4 letters or more. But that may be a myth, wishful thinking, or varying with entities that host these things (the contest in question hasn't returned my inquiry). Anyone with experience in holding or entering these contests (or schoolteachers who grade papers, etc.) your input is appreciated.

Am I actually going to get in trouble if I drive this car?

My girlfriend and I are taking a trip. She's 27, I'm 24. We're renting a car in her name. What are the consequences if she doesn't tell Hertz about me, but I drive anyway? For her to add me as an authorized driver, it's going to increase the price by fifty bucks ($10/day). My initial thought is that, as a driver with 8 years of experience and a spotless driving record, we should just not tell Hertz of my existence and proceed along normally. What are the possible negative consequences if we were to do such a thing? (Traveling from Michigan to Oklahoma, by the way.)

Here's what Hertz has to say:

Authorized Operators

Acceptable Authorized Operators age 25 and older are automatically covered on the Rental Agreement.
Authorized Operators are:
- The employer, employee or fellow employee of renter on company business, (when booking includes company Corporate Discount Number).
- The renter's spouse for rentals that originate in California, Iowa, New York or Nevada.
- Authorized Operators do not have to be present at time of rental.
- There are no fees for Authorized Operators.

Additional Authorized Operators
- Individuals not automatically covered on the Rental Agreement as Authorized Operators noted above may be signed on as an "Additional Authorized Operator" (AAO). AAO's must be present and may be signed on to the rental agreement at the time of rental or during the rental at any US corporate location.
- An applicable driving record verification will be performed on the AAO.
- Renter and each AAO must be present to sign Rental Agreement, present an acceptable credit card or debit card (if renting city accepts debit cards) in their own name, or a current round-trip ticket (air, train or bus), show valid driver's license, and must be a minimum of 25 years of age.

Additional Authorized Operators Fees
USD 10.00 per day, maximum USD 50.00 per rental, for each Additional Authorized Operator.

iDVD Number-of-Chapters Limit

Does iDVD have a limit to the number of "chapters" it can burn? Do DVDs themselves have a 99-chapter limit? I need to make a DVD with about 1.5 hours of video divided into over 100 different short clips (possibly up to 120), set up with an easy hierarchical menu system. I thought iDVD might be the easiest way to make so many menus.

You've been approved!

Why would I need $80,000 in credit? I got in to a conversation with a coworker the other day about credit. I believe it stared with the notion of using credit cards sparingly to build up a credit history. At any rate, during the course of the conversation he mentioned he has a credit limit of about eighty grand spread over several cards.

I have one credit card with less than two thousand dollars credit available to me. While this is a result of a lack of credit history (I avoided cards as much as possible until I got screwed on my auto loan), it got me thinking. I put about two hundred dollars on my card every month and pay the balance off in full. I really only use it for business expenses and one or two purchases a month to build up my credit history. I can't imagine ever needing a credit limit that's almost 50% more than my yearly salary.

So, why would anyone need a huge credit limit? Is this just a cause (or effect) of the spend-more-than-you-make society nowadays? Is there a practical use for it? Is it possible to get low enough rates on credit cards that it would be more beneficial to use them than, say, taking out a loan from a bank?

Traffic Technicalities Times Three

A flurry of interrelated USA speed limit questions:

At what point does the speed limit (USA) become so, at the point of the sign, when you see it, or when you gradually acc/decelerate that far?

Relatedly, do the exit/offramp yellow-sign speed limits actually count? How do they expect me to go from a freeway 60 to an offramp 30 and back to an access road 50? Is this implausible 30 just a recommendation, or can I actually get ticketed for doing 60 in a 30 on an offramp?

Smart-a$$ily speaking, I have never seen a speed limit on an on-ramp -- does this mean I can go 220 until I see a speed limit sign?

Is there a book like "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" for No Limit Texas Hold 'Em?

Is there a book like "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" for No Limit Texas Hold 'Em? There are tons of chess books, and tons of poker books, but for my money that little paperback workbook improved my chess game more than any other.

I've read a few introductory books on poker, and am starting to get the hang of it, but I'd really like to see a workbook with scenarios to work through, with explanations of when to bet and when to check or fold on the answer page.

Estate Tax Filter
I've been trying to figure out how much someone can inherit before having to pay a whole mess of taxes on the money. I've been trying to use the IRS Estate and Gift Tax page but am just as confused as before. Can anyone help me out?
