If I get different brands of wireless lights, do they operate on different frequencies, or will all of them turn on using a single remote? [more inside]
I just replaced my 1995 300zx turbo's burned-out headlights with some cheap factory 9006 bulbs and can barely see anything at night. I don't want to get HIDs but would like to find a headlight that actually illuminates the road and makes driving safer. I've narrowed it down to three options: Philips X-treme Vision, Philips HIR2 9012, or Sylvania SilverStar Ultra (which I may rule out, because apparently they burn out really quickly). Does anyone have any advice on these, or any other suggestions? I do plan to clean out the headlights as well, if there's anything to clean out.
Our range hood has become death, destroyer of light bulbs. We're having to change bulbs about once a month, even after switching from normal to "oven"-type. We never use the hood fan, either. Any ideas on what might be causing this, and a possible simple fix short of asking our landlord to replace the hood?
When fluorescent lights burn out, what is happening? Also, why do they flicker when they're about to go out? [more inside]
For Christmas this year, my 7-month-old daughter received a few electronic toys that beep or bloop, light up, and move. A couple purport to have educational value, and they're all relatively annoying (to dad). What's the view of the pediatric establishment of these toys? [more inside]
For a while in the 90s, icicle lights were super popular Christmas decorations. Not the kind with dangly strings of little light bulbs, but ones that actually looked like lighted icicles. I haven't seen them in years - not in stores, not on anyone's houses. Where did they go? [more inside]

A bizarre question, I know, but I'm looking for as many examples as I can find of lights being turned on and off in movies. [more inside]
My not quite two year old nephew is fascinated by lights. He calls them phee, which is adorable. I discovered today that he is so fascinated with them that he enjoyed watching me, via webcam, blink on and off the plain white led on my phone. I have a feeling that if I were to amass a small arsenal of brightly colored, differently blinking—dare I say it?—color-changing and/or blink-speed-coordinating lights, I would be favorite auntie for at least fifteen minutes at a go. (Which is a long time for a toddler!) My requirements within. [more inside]
I have seen many controlled intersections that have one (or more) left turn lanes with one (or more) straight-through lanes with separate signals for the left turn lane(s) versus the straight lane(s). In general, those intersections are designed to have straight-through traffic going from two opposing directions and then alternate with left-turning traffic going from two opposing directions. When the straight-through traffic is passing, why do the left-turning lanes get a red circular light rather than a green circular light or a yellow circular light? [more inside]
We've lost the original transformer for our Christmas lights, will there be any problems with running on a differently rated transformer? Lights are LEDs and both lights and transformer are rated at 1 amp.
Need to replace pull switch light fixture so the light switch next to the door actually turns it on instead. Also where can I buy this light fixture (or a cheaper alternative)? [more inside]
I want to start messing with LEDs; I have two (similar) projects in mind. I want a strip of multi-colored LEDs to respond to music. And second, inspired in part by this thread, I'm interested in learning about turning sound-responsive LEDs into a costume. I imagine those two projects are pretty similar, other than needing a portable power supply for the latter, right? So, can anyone help me figure out what I should get to start with? [more inside]
I recently moved. The only light in my bathroom is from five of these bulbs (with the smaller bases -- I don't know exactly what they're called) over the medicine cabinet. I'm wondering if there are nice, bright, LED (full spectrum?) SAD-fightin' bulbs, ideally with warm white light, that I could screw in in their place. Any additional brightness would be welcome to help my brain as I get ready for the day and the year gets darker (I have to get up very early for work). Thanks very much!
The Biglow Canyon Wind Farm in Oregon, south of the Columbia River, has around 200 wind turbines operating. A while ago I drove past this installation at night time and I noticed that all the lights on top of the turbines - to indicate their presence to aircrafts, no doubt - were blinking in a totally synchronized manner. How is that possible? [more inside]
Winter has come. Because of my schedule and the late sunrise/early sunset, I find my daily run is happening in the dark morning or dark night. [more inside]
It seems like all the home automation device/app combos allow me to only control my lights or devices while inside my house where, you know, I can actually just walk over to them and turn them on and off already. [more inside]
Saw a video where the gal played a violin and there was a light inside, somehow--you could see the F-holes glowing. You can see it towards the end of the video. It wasn't CGI. My daughter plays the viola and thought that was really cool and wondered how she could do that and still make the light removable. Of course, it might alter the sound somewhat but she doesn't care as it wouldn't be permanent, (if it can be done at all.) Anyone have any ideas how to temporarily make the inside of a violin/viola light up without viola surgery and still be able to reverse it? Yeah, it's a weird question but doesn't hurt to ask.

I live in San Diego, and I hate the traffic lights along a particular road that I always drive on (Genesee Avenue). I'm regularly astonished at how soul-crushingly stupid they can be, and I'm constantly yelling at them from my car like an idiot. What can I do about this? My dream would be to talk to the traffic engineers in my city, really pick their brains and offer my observations. How does one go about making this happen? [more inside]
