Need bright, wide-angle lights for can fixtures in low-ceiling space

Our finished basement has a very low ceiling with widely-spaced overhead can fixtures, causing a lot of dark areas. I've tried a few different LED and fluorescent bulbs, but none of them produce enough light and/or they have too narrow of a beam angle. [more inside]

Why does 1 WTC look like the top floors are still under construction?

The top 1/3rd or so of 1 WTC is illuminated, at night, by intensely bright white lights which look almost exactly like construction lights hung in unfinished buildings. Other skyscrapers are lit by warmer yellowish office lights. What's the deal? Are those floors empty or is that just the new trend in skyscraper lighting?

What am I legally supposed to do at this intersection?

I am a cyclist in NSW, Australia. At the intersection in this image, I am not sure what I am legally supposed to do (or what my best option is if the legal one is not safe, which I think might be the case). The red line represents off-road cycle paths separate from the pedestrian footpath. I am trying to get from where the first red line (left) ends to where the second one starts (right). Can anyone tell me what I should do? Or who do I contact to find out (or to lobby to improve the intersection for cyclists) - the local council? [more inside]

What would make tiny electronics repair more comfortable?

My husband likes to take electronics apart and put them back together (cameras, smart phones etc.). Right now his setup is ridiculous: he works (mostly) over a big tupperware container to catch the screws that fall into it, unless they fall on the floor, and he holds the flashlight on his iPhone with one hand while trying to wrestle tiny screws into place with the other hand. There has to be a better way; this looks painful. what can i buy him to improve his setup (lights, magnifiers, other things i haven't thought about)? What do you use in your efficient and effective home repair shops?

"POLICE! SEARCH WARRANT! APT. XXX!"

I live in an apartment (that I moved into less than a month ago) and was awakened this morning about 6 a.m. by a very loud bang that I thought was a gunshot. Immediately rolled out of bed and hit the floor and went to my closet. Then I heard a mechanical woman's voice, sounded pre-recorded for sure, say the street address, and then repeated, "POLICE! SEARCH WARRANT! APT. XXX!" over and over and over. About 7-8 minutes later I could see flashing lights. At some point after that I fell back asleep. [more inside]

Advice on brighter car headlights?

I just replaced my 1995 300zx turbo's burned-out headlights with some cheap factory 9006 bulbs and can barely see anything at night. I don't want to get HIDs but would like to find a headlight that actually illuminates the road and makes driving safer. I've narrowed it down to three options: Philips X-treme Vision, Philips HIR2 9012, or Sylvania SilverStar Ultra (which I may rule out, because apparently they burn out really quickly). Does anyone have any advice on these, or any other suggestions? I do plan to clean out the headlights as well, if there's anything to clean out.

Range hood lights keep burning out.

Our range hood has become death, destroyer of light bulbs. We're having to change bulbs about once a month, even after switching from normal to "oven"-type. We never use the hood fan, either. What's that, Aunt Ocherdraco? Why, nephew, it's a Phee!

My not quite two year old nephew is fascinated by lights. He calls them phee, which is adorable. I discovered today that he is so fascinated with them that he enjoyed watching me, via webcam, blink on and off the plain white led on my phone. I have a feeling that if I were to amass a small arsenal of brightly colored, differently blinking—dare I say it?—color-changing and/or blink-speed-coordinating lights, I would be favorite auntie for at least fifteen minutes at a go. Why aren't left turn signals "yields" rather than "stops"?

I have seen many controlled intersections that have one (or more) left turn lanes with one (or more) straight-through lanes with separate signals for the left turn lane(s) versus the straight lane(s). In general, those intersections are designed to have straight-through traffic going from two opposing directions and then alternate with left-turning traffic going from two opposing directions. When the straight-through traffic is passing, why do the left-turning lanes get a red circular light rather than a green circular light or a yellow circular light? [more inside]

Help me un-SAD my bathroom

I recently moved. The only light in my bathroom is from five of these bulbs (with the smaller bases -- I don't know exactly what they're called) over the medicine cabinet. I'm wondering if there are nice, bright, LED (full spectrum?) SAD-fightin' bulbs, ideally with warm white light, that I could screw in in their place. Any additional brightness would be welcome to help my brain as I get ready for the day and the year gets darker (I have to get up very early for work). Thanks very much!

Lights on wind turbines - all in sync, but how?

The Biglow Canyon Wind Farm in Oregon, south of the Columbia River, has around 200 wind turbines operating. Weird question--How to light up inside of violin/viola?

Saw a video where the gal played a violin and there was a light inside, somehow--you could see the F-holes glowing. You can see it towards the end of the video. It wasn't CGI. My daughter plays the viola and thought that was really cool and wondered how she could do that and still make the light removable. Of course, it might alter the sound somewhat but she doesn't care as it wouldn't be permanent, (if it can be done at all.) Anyone have any ideas how to temporarily make the inside of a violin/viola light up without viola surgery and still be able to reverse it? Yeah, it's a weird question but doesn't hurt to ask.

How can I get my city to improve traffic signal timings?
