Secrets, privacy, fibs or lies?

My partner frequently tells small lies. They also keep certain things secret, including behaviors they deem private. This is a lifelong strategy that long precedes me, and in many ways, has nothing to do with me, however, it drives me up the fucking wall. [more inside]

I Didn't Promise You a Rose Garden

Boss told me if I took a course she would increase my pay. She paid for the course on the condition that I would continue to work there for a set amount of time. The agreements we made about the course, how long I would stay after the course, and salary increase were all verbal. I took the course, now she claims she did not say there would be an increase. There are witnesses who agree that she did promise an increase. [more inside]

Insincerity and the spoken voice.

People often put on a 'funny voice' or accent for emphasis or just in general conversation. This is possibly a reaction to their company but possibly some kind of psychological obfuscation? Does askmetafilter know of any any research into the way people put on funny voices for emphasis when they say things? Accents and intonations etc. Google has not been kind to finding ideas or starting points.

Friend of friend tells a blatant lie. What do I do?

A good friend of a good friend is going around telling a very blatant lie. The problem is that the lie is about a petty topic. I am disturbed by the fact that she is telling a blatant lie regardless of the topic, don't understand why she keeps telling it, and really don't enjoy humoring someone who is clearly lying. However I will seem petty if I object to it. What do I do? [more inside]

Ungrateful entitled prick with his head in the clouds? Or exploited lab rat with legitimate concerns? You make the call!

I'm having trouble dealing with dissatisfaction with my first post-college job, which makes me feel more than a little over-entitled. My frank impression is that the workplace is in shambles and that I'd been lied to in the interview process; more charitably, I'm wondering if perhaps this particular posting just isn't for me. Given the details, what's the best way for me to go about readjusting my mind for the position, readjusting the position for my mind (i.e. closer to what I was told it would be), or giving up the ghost and going for something different?
