How do you replace a lost learner's permit in California? I read on the DMV's website how to replace a lost license -- you have to make an appointment, pay some money and fill out a whole new application. But what about a lost learner's permit. If I have a photocopy of the original, can I drive with that? Or do I need to go to the DMV and obtain a new permit?

A friend, who is still within their two years probationary period, bought a car at auction recently. Stupidly, they did not have the proper insurance to drive it home, and were stopped by the police. What is the most likely outcome? [more inside]

Dear ID Checkers: How can you tell when someone borrows a license from a brother or friend who looks similar? What do you do when you suspect the person in the ID is not the person in front of you? This is just to satisfy my curiousity of course. [more inside]

I recently purchased an album by downloading it from a website. The license agreement said that I can burn it up to 10 times, and put it on up to 3 mobile devices. Both of those are fine by me - I only have one iPod, and I don't really need 10 CD copies of it. It did get me to thinking, though... [more inside]

Is there a way to move Norton anti virus license from a trashed machine to a new machine or re-activate it on a rebuilt machine ? More than a few times I have been in a situation where I had to reinstall Win2k or rebuild the whole machine or replace a crappy machine with a newly built one.
Does Norton AV allow license migration in such situations? I think their activation process normally does not like that if I remember right. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Also any opinion on free edition of AVG anti-virus software from GriSoft ?

I am a licensed driver in California, with a valid Class "C" license.
I am thinking of buying a "Vespa" type motorscooter. Do I need to get a special motorcycle license, or does my current license cover it?

I want to be licensed. Licensed for as many things as I possibly can. Hunting, shooting, fishing, arms dealing, chair building, carpet spraying, anything at all. If there are licenses that I can apply for at a nominal cost, I'd like to know about them. [more inside]

I am running a free Web-based service for friends and acquaintances. Lately, the volume on this service has been growing greatly. The next step is to move the service to a professional host. I am thinking of putting a paypal donation button on the site to help pay for it. Are there any legal or tax issues I need to worry about? Do I need a business license? What if I want to start selling Cafe Press items or running Google ads? I am located in the USA.

got me thinking... Why is it that there are video and game rental outlets (Blockbu$ter, Hollywood, etc) but not CD rental outlets here in the US? Anyone know anything about the license agreements video rental outlets sign and in turn what license agreements one accepts when they purchase a CD from a store? Why wouldn't I be able to rent out my CDs? You'd think in this day of iPods, CDRs and such large hard drives, this would be a killer busines to get into.

Can someone please explain to me the difference between owning and/or licensing proprietary software, or if there is even a difference in those two terms?

Not to drag the current MovableType Love-fest over to AskMe, but I was wondering if any of the lawyers out there would be able to explain why this provision is in the new license:
Making Copies. You may install the Software on only one (1) computer or server having a single CPU. You may make one (1) copy of the Software in any machine readable form solely for back-up purposes, provided you reproduce the Software in its original form and with all proprietary notices on the back-up copy. An acquaintance who travels overseas frequently would like to scan and store her important identification (passport and driver's license) along with her credit cards, and store the images securely online. We would like to make the documents easily accessible to her through a Web page, but otherwise secure. I have offered her some space on my shared server, and while I have some ideas about how to secure things, suggestions would be useful.
