I should be more plugged into the news, but at the beginning of the summer the story in Libya was stalemate and now I see fighting in Tripoli and the apparent collapse of the Gaddafi regime. What happened militarily to break the stalemate?

Who are Qadaffi's supporters in Libya? Does he have real anti-colonial legitimacy? What's with all of the revolutionary language attached to the structures of government? Surely there is a more interesting story here than 'he's evil' or 'he's batshit crazy', and yet that seems to be just about all i can come up with. Does anyone take these questions seriously?

Regarding the Lockerbie bomber, recently released and returned to Libya, where he was given a heroes welcome (in defiance of Obama's warning that such a homecoming would affect American/Libyan relations)....has anyone read an article, perhaps in the foreign press, explaining the feelings Libyans (the people, not the whacky regime) have for this guy?
