How did paper-based library circulation work before computers? I remember that the librarian stamped the book and the book's card with the due date (by hand), and then kept the card. What did they do with the card? How did they associate the book with my account? Was there a separate ledger where they kept the association? Or did they write my name/number on the card itself?

I work at a public library where we use a popular pc reservation and management system for our public PCs. Some young dudes come in, bypass the login screens and play World of Warcraft etc from their flash disks. My concern is they’ve managed to get admin privileges to do naughty things like extend their session time and kick other people with reservations off. I am just a lowly circulation clerk wondering if anyone could explain HOW these fellows bypass the reservation system and some possible strategies I could suggest while I wait to unleash my ultimate plan for a sound proof gamers lounge. No emailing to another location is allowed. Thank you.

I want a set of Discworld bookends for my Terry Pratchett collection. I'm particularly interested in Death, as I already have a gift set with the Librarian and Rincewind. I'm having trouble even finding the bookends online, and shipping directly from the UK would be pretty expensive, as they're heavy (naturally) and I'm in Florida. Where to look? How to get the best deal? Any help from the hive mind would be greatly appreciated!

I am trying to design a banner for a public library web site. I find that all the banners I design are too retro-looking. Kind of 1950s, Alvin Lustig or Saul Bass inspired. Cute, but they don't seem to represent a forward-thinking, technology-oriented library. I am looking for examples of banners that might inspire me, and I am hoping you all might have some suggestions. Also, any elements you think I should try to include or try to avoid. This banner will be seen by tens of thousands of people, and will be the "face" of the library online. Links to examples of what you think works and why it works would be much appreciated. I had no idea that I would have such a hard time with this; I just don't seem to get 2007 design! Thanks.
I have a Masters in Library Science. I received it a year and a bit back. In that time, I have been applying for a job in the public library sector as a reference librarian. I am not getting anywhere though I am following professional protocol in regards to a sound cover letter and solid resume. I got a 3.6 GPA in the program which is decent but not perfect. Decent, though. I have recently been broadening my search to places outside of my home state of Indiana (and Indianapolis). If you have any recommendations for the best job site areas to review on a regular basis, I am interested. [more inside]
