What ebook reader should I lend from my small school library?

I run an elementary school library in an economically diverse urban neighborhood. I want to buy a couple ebook readers so that my kids can see what using them is like (and so I can learn about the issues around lending and using these devices.) Various questions inside. [more inside]

How do I prepare a new book?

I was once shown how to prepare a brand new book before reading it– it had something to do with opening the book at various places and smoothing down the pages. Supposedly it would make the binding last longer. Does this actually work, and if so, could anyone describe the process clearly? Any other advice on good book care and repair for this new librarian would be greatly appreciated.

Do I Have To Go To The Library?

When do students need to go to a library? I'm writing a lesson plan for teachers to use when teaching research to middle schoolers. Most kids probably figure the internet is the ultimate source for research, and wonder why anyone would bother going to the library. I'm trying to answer that question: this is what I have so far.
