Is it possible to develop that smoky quality in one's voice (Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Janis Joplin, etc.) without damaging one's vocal chords? Or is that something that just occurs naturally, or else would be too dangerous to try?

I'm in the second round of interviews for this competitive science summer camp teaching position. This includes presenting a three-minute lesson on anything in particular that targets K-5 kids. My problem: I've never taught kids before, and I'm pretty sure those I'm up against have. What do you think would be a good, short demonstration that gives kids some hands-on experience and that would also blow their minds? [more inside]

Daughter (age six) perhaps to begin piano lessons. Considering a weighted response electronic keyboard as a piano substitute. Seeking advice in brands, models, retailers, price, durability, and indeed, overall wisdom of this route over standard piano. All views even slightly extraneous welcome. Thanks in advance. I am looking for a guitar teacher in either DC or Baltimore. I am at an intermediate level (mostly rock). I used to take lessons but haven't in about 8 years, so I'm rusty. I am looking for someone with an excellent reputation, which I am willing to pay for. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Piano teacher recommendations for Los Angeles area? (Or, for those not in LA, how do I know if a piano teacher is any good?) Bonus points for someone who teaches good technique near the Studio City/Sherman Oaks area. (Also, if there's a good forum for getting such a recommendation, that'd be good info too) [more inside]

I'm looking for a bluegrass mandolin and/or guitar teacher in new york city - specifically someone near Columbia University or on the upper west side (or who would travel there for lessons).
Have tried finding one on craig's list and looked at flyers at music stores.
Any suggestions on how to find such a teacher, or knowledge of such a person?

Does anyone know any group teachers for club dance in Los Angeles. I'm tired of moving like a white guy on the floor. Basically I've never been a good club dancer and it's kept me from going to clubs. I've decided to do something about it. But I don't want to take individual lessons. For one thing, it'd just be too weird dancing with some teacher one on one. For another I've got nowhere in my apt for them to teach me. (I live in a studio).
So what I want is somewhere in LA that kind of teaches a group 101 on "how to not look spastic on the dancefloor." Any suggestions?

Any drummers out there? I've been wanting to learn to play the drums for a long time. I have a solid musical background - years of piano, saxophone, and guitar - and a good sense of timing. Without much spare cash for lessons, I'm wondering if it's possible to teach yourself to play. If so, any good instructional books/CDs/techniques? And what about a starter kit - features, brands, models, price range?
