Are there cheap alternatives for the large and elaborate "dry boxes" I see listed for use as dehumidified storage cabinets for lenses and other camera gear?
I've built up a little collection, live where the summer humidity is often high, and do not run my AC 24/7.
My first thought is that this is basically an airtight box with a bunch of dessicant inside. Can't really be that simple, though.
CanonFilter: It appears I have dirt inside the my Canon 28-135mm lens... Rather, it looks to me like it's on the inner optics, and not the prime lens... [more inside]
Yet another optician question. I got a prescription for reading/computer glasses, but I really need progressives (I think) because I can't see anything closeup without the glasses on. But I don't trust my optician. [more inside]

What's your favorite Nikon-compatible macro lens? I'm completely new to macro photography (and still pretty new to photography in general, having purchased my first DSLR a little over a year ago), and I'm leaning towards the Nikon 60mm f/2.8D AF, largely because of the price differential between this and some of the other Nikkor macros. Anyone have any great experience with some of the makeshift macro lenses (using extension tubes, reversing rings, etc)?

I'm interested in fitting odd lenses -- and making custom lenses -- to/for digital cameras and digital video cameras. I'm not terribly concerned with the electronic side of things, so you shouldn't be either. What I'm looking for is a crass/crash course in optics -- something (a book, a video, a class, a kit) that will teach me the basics of optics and allow me to force photocopier lenses, telescopes, and microscopes onto unsuspecting recording devices.
I'm about to buy a new pair of eyeglasses. For my prescription I want high index progressive lenses. I want the high index so the lenses will be as thin as possible. I keep hearing that Zeiss lenses are better than other brands and would like to know if this is true before I spend my money. Costco does not sell Zeiss. Is whatever Coscto sells as good optically?

Has anyone recently purchased "transitions" lenses (that go from clear to shaded) for your specs? I remember kids who had these in high school (this was 10+ years ago) and they always looked terrible- half-shaded indoors. I've had a few friends recommend them lately, though. [more inside]

I have an old Nikon N6006 film SLR. I am interested in buying a Nikon D70 digital SLR and would like to know if my old lenses will be compatible. Has anyone transitioned from rigid gas permeable contact lenses to glasses? Did your prescription stay stable? Why do glasses make me feel cross eyed and fuzzy headed compared to RGPs--do I just have to wait it out and get used to them, or was the prescription wrong? Can I wear RGPs part of the time and glasses part of the time? [NB: I've never gotten good answers on these questions from my eye doc.]
