I'm buying my first DSLR, a Canon 60D
. My original intention had been to purchase a body and (18-55mm) lens kit and spend some time learning with that before purchasing any other lenses.
However, I have found an excellent deal on a 60D body only and am contemplating purchasing that and putting the savings (and maybe a little top-up from the slush-fund) to purchasing a separate lens. (Especially as i understand that kit lenses tend not to be great quality).
What would be your recommendation for a good, versatile lens for a DSLR beginner?

What is the best lens for a trip to Europe, for a Canon Rebel XS, that is budget-friendly
I'm looking for a lens that will give me a good range of wide shots (buildings, landscapes, etc) as well as the nice details in closer shots. I would ideally like to carry only one lens with me, since I'm traveling light and don't really want to change out lenses all the time. [more inside]

I'm used to working with a Nikon film camera and a 50mm f/1.8 lens. What normal or close to normal lens would you recommend for a camera with a 1.6x crop factor like the Canon Rebel T4i? The kit lens is an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II, which works, but I miss being able to take photos in low light without a flash.

A Canon 80-200mm zoom lens I've been holding on to has broken, and fixing it would be more expensive than a replacement. What should I do with it? [more inside]

I need a lens for low-light, hand-held, food photography on my Canon 40D. I will be renting the lens so cost is not an issue and prefer only one lens instead of swapping them out. I will be taking pictures in restaurants during actual meals so dishes must be fully framed from the seated position. No tripod, no flashes, no standing up, no trickery. What would you recommend?

Sigma 18-125mm f/3.8-5.6 AF DC OS HSM vs. Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, besides the obvious zoom range differences is the Canon really
worth twice the Sigma? I've checked a number of reviews and it doesn't look like the Canon's advantage is as clear cut as the price would suggest.

Photofilter: Which lens should I buy?
I'm in the market for a new prime. I've narrowed it down (for various reasons) to either Canon 85/1.8 or the new Sigma 50/1.4.
Do any fellow photogs out there have experience with either one or have a recommendation. Eventually, I want to go with the 85/1.2II but it'll be awhile before I have the cash.
I'm looking for something with good bokeh as I like to shoot wide open and get short DOF. Currently, I'm using an old OM Zuiko 50/1.4 to achieve that but since it's not autofocus, I miss more in-focus shots than I like.
In case you need to know to answer I shoot on a 30D and a 5D.

What kind of tripod mount ring do I need for a Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens? I bought a used lens, but it's missing the tripod collar mount ring. It looks like Canon makes a few different mount rings, and I can't figure out which one I need for this particular lens. Does anybody know? Even better, if you know where I can get one on the cheap. If there's an off-brand solution out there, I don't care who makes it as long as it fits my lens and works well.
