Can you convert a (literate) non-reader?

I would like my boyfriend to read more for leisure. Partly because I think he'd enjoy it, but also because I think it would be a good activity to share together. He's never been "into" reading; I think he sees it as a significant commitment. Were you a non-reader previously and now love to read? What made you change? If you are an avid reader yourself, have you ever inspired someone to start? How did you go about it? [more inside]

Can I span 30' with a hammock?

I am getting my first hammock, and ENO DoubleNest. Hurray! There are three trees in our yard, with 28' to 30' between each pair. I also ordered a set of Slap Straps Pro, which should juuuust make that distance. Will I have any problems? If it won't reach, can I just make a "jumper" of rope from each Slap Straps to the carabiner on the hammock? [more inside]

Thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.

I feel like I'm trying to do too many things at once, all of them poorly. I also feel that I'm doing myself a big disservice by being in this situation. I feel like my life is in total disorder. I feel like I'm losing the race, to be honest. I'm afraid that the only way to win the race is to run faster, which I'm finding very difficult. Sordid details following. [more inside]

No skiing for you! :(

My husband and I are headed to Salt Lake City next week for a ski vacation—except that he just tore his Achilles tendon. Needless to say, him skiing is now out of the question. Please help cheer him up with recommendations for interesting drives, day trips from SLC, anywhere cool that he can sit and read or people-watch, and awesome places to eat. [more inside]

DIY tent upgrade - advice needed please

Our tent is OK but there's a gap between the sides and the groundsheet, which makes it rather chilly. How can I best make it more wind- and rain-proof? I think attaching a strip of some sort of waterproof material around the bottom of the sides, that could be tucked under the groundsheet, is the best option. But what sort of fabric? And how do I stop the water wicking up it from the ground and making the sides of the tent wet? [more inside]
