I'm looking for the online equivalent of a dollhouse, or Lego or Playmobil people — a Flash/Java/whatever app that lets the user dress up a bunch of characters with different clothes/props/features/whatever and arrange them in a scene. I know I've seen stuff like this on websites for kids. The catch is, we need this for a psycholinguistics experiment we're running, which means we need to be able to run the app on our own server and record the user's actions (with consent, of course). Does something like this exist? [more inside]

I recently obtained an older version of the Lego Mindstorms kit. It is the Robotics Invention System (RIS) and I think dated back to 1998. I would like to use Mindstorms to introduce my son to robotics and programming. He is already a huge fan of legos and building various structures and vehicles. [more inside]

My girlfriend is a big Lego fan and a big Harry Potter fan. (Sadly, yet thankfully, she's not yet a big Ask.metafilter fan.) I'm going to get her the Hogwarts Express Lego set for her birthday. The question: 4708 or 4758? Essentially, Lego put out two versions of this for two different movies. They both roughly go for the same amount on eBay, and have roughly the same number of pieces. Any insight into which one would be more fun? (She enjoys the build taking awhile and having lots of little things that do stuff afterwards. I think less important is which characters come with the set.) [more inside]

It seems to me that bricklaying would be more efficient if house bricks interlocked like Lego blocks. Why aren't they made like that?
