I want to run a Tor relay node from my house in the United States. What, if any, legal considerations should I be concerned about? [more inside]
Obviously this question was promoted by Ed Snowden and his disclosure of NSA data collection on American citizens. The NSA is basically recording everything it can get its hands on, be it foreign intelligence or data on American citizens, even if the latter isn't in any way suspected of wrongdoing. The agency is simply collecting and storing everything, seemingly with little regard to the US 4th amendment, which guarantees against "unreasonable searches and seizures". [more inside]
In order for any web site to charge one for services or goods, in this case services, what are they legally required to record and produce? I'm having a little trouble wording my exact question so maybe this will help. The web site in question provides phone service for inmates in correctional facilities and in order for one to receive calls from a loved one in the correctional facility you have to set up an account and attach a phone number to it while loading money for the overpriced service... $5 for 15mins. The company charged me a fee of $5 every time I was to load money on the account which did not show the rate for a call per min and also charged me numerous unknown fees. I could not tell why or how much I was charged which was made worse by their not being a way to track credits and charges to the account. When I contacted customer support they also could not account for the charges and would not refund them, refused to refund my visa purchase, and claims to have no way of producing charges and credits to my account. Their customer service is no help and I'm not sure how to handle the situation. [more inside]

The charity I volunteer with want me to set up a photography competition with a prize or prizes to be determined. Anyone can submit an unlimited number of entries (within reason) and the winner(s) will be decided by judges appointed by us. We'll display the photos on our website. What kind of legal warning do I need to provide on the competition entry page to safeguard us? Can I use some kind of standard template? [more inside]

Have you read or can you point me to any interesting articles about what will be the future of media like films/software/books given the way they are all being distributed online via torrent sites & the like. Will copyright go away or what? I am looking for INTERESTING theoretical speculations, not some person just saying the letter of the current law will be enforced or the usual doomsday-talk.

A friend of mine owns a record store and is curious about the legalities of giving away monthly mixed CDs. Each disc would feature 10 or so artists connected on a theme (female folk, avant garde jazz, little-known world, etc.) of artists he's featuring that month. No charge for the CDs. Basically, it's like the CDs you get with Mojo or CMJ. Legal? He's in Canada. What if they're "free with any purchase". Legal?
Can anyone point me to legal articles or cases relevant to fanfic auctions where the proceeds go to a third party? To what extent are such auctions considered 'selling'? [more inside]
I often see big-deal blogs such as Consumerist using third-party Flickr pictures to illustrate stories. I'm under the impression that when these pictures are tagged with an appropriate Creative Commons license, that such use is ok (as long as it falls under the restrictions set forth). But if it's explicitly tagged 'All Rights Reserved' how is this OK? Are they getting permission in each instance?
My dept is becoming part of the National Division (home office in Georgia) rather than the Regional Division (where I now work at Regional Division Home Office in PA). I am not physically moving anywhere. My employer is now National Div, even though it is just the parent/umbrella of Regional Div. My insurance carrier will now be BCBS of GA instead of Highmark BS of PA. ADHD is covered by Highmark. It is not by BCBS of GA. I will end up paying about $4000 in out of pocket expenses due to this. Is this legal? What are my options? Supplemental insurance for MH does not exist. I make too much for any state aid and am ineligible for other state MH programs. Today at work, a closet was being cleaned out, many items were being tossed in a trash cart. I noticed that a few of these items were unopened, brand new (though out-of-date) items, and out of curiousity, checked to see if they were worth anything. I noticed that a few of them were going for not-insignificant amounts of money on ye olde eBay, and "rescued" them from the trash, thinking about creating a D-I-Y Christmas Bonus out of them by putting them up on eBay. Other co-workers have done similar things, selling a fair amount of old equipment at garage sales, etc, and none of my immediate peers seemed to think anything of it. Mrs. [anonymous], however, seems to feel that it's ethically wrong to do so, and more importantly potentially legally wrong. Does the hivemind have any knowledge of the legal (and/or ethical) implications of this D-I-Y Christmas Bonus? (For reference, we're probably talking $300 total, here.)

For example, I love the "Real Genius"-inspired shirts that founditemclothing.com is producing ( "I Love Toxic Waste," "International Order for Gorillas," and "Surf Nicaragua,") but I'm wondering if it's permissible under the law. Thanks in advance to anyone willing and able to take a stab at explaning it.
