Looking for legal advice in NYC

Asking for a friend. We are looking for a lawyer or firm that does civil litigation. Buuuuuuuuuut we need them to review the case first and say whether there is a case. Is that sort of consultation included in the (hopefully) contingency fees or would it be billed separately? [more inside]

Advice for drafting a legal will to release my IP into the public domain

I want to create a legal document declaring in robust legalese that all of my intellectual property (except works specifically noted) shall enter the public domain upon my death and a website to host (or link to p2p copies of) archives of those works. I want the legal documents to make it easy for other people to use or adapt for themselves and ideally for the site to act as a host or tracker for them to post to. I'm seeking legal and technical advice as well as general input in order to make this happen. [more inside]

Legal advice regarding publishing documentation of sexual assult

The assault occurred in Panama, while I was working for a US-based nonprofit biology field school. I'm Canadian, and never had a contract with this institution. I was assaulted by an American coworker who targets the young women he comes into contact with via this job (and other lines of work, all as a teacher). I have a recording of him admitting what he did, and two recordings of the head of the organization explaining that he wont do anything and that he knows but doesnt care that this person is a predator. The recordings were made without permission. I've been told that the federal funding this organization receives would disappear if I could somehow find that granting agency and contact them with my complaint. What I'd really like to know is whether I could publish my recordings without legal repercussion, or what the outcome might be if I did, regardless. [more inside]

Unsure of the procedure to obtain copyright permissions in this scenario

Okay, so I've composed a bunch of music to go with selections from a book of short stories, and things are coming together and I've started to perform & record them. They're mostly 1-2 minutes and the idea is that I'd record myself reading them along with the music; think of something along he lines of Ken Nordine's work. Anyways, it's just something I've been doing for fun, creativity for the sake of creativity and all that. But as it's finally coming together, I have an urge, naturally, to share it with people, at which point legal considerations arise. [more inside]

I need legal advice - about legal advice.

My daughter was seriously injured more than a year and a half ago. We hired an attorney. The attorney was gung-ho for a while. Then he dropped the case. We kind of gave up. Now, I realize that my daughter's life has been severely compromised by her injuries. We still have a few months when we could refile with a different attorney. What should I do? [more inside]

My life is now very like the movie "knocked up". Help!

My ex, 30+ years of age, contacted me a few days ago to tell me I'd gotten her knocked up. Yesterday she said she wanted to keep it. She lives in NYC, where I lived until three days ago. I'm now in the UK. I can afford to jump on a plane back to NYC. So, who do I need to contact to get legal advice? How do I find out what my rights and responsibilities are? Two less delicate questions inside... [more inside]

He sold my car???

You are not my lawyer. You may not even BE a lawyer. But my friend needs, if not actual legal advice, some general suggestions about how to proceed. The short story: her ex-boyfriend sold her car without telling her, without her consent, and appears to have fled the state with his ill-gotten gains. This question is probably California-specific.
