The current plan is to cover 50% of the health insurance premium, including dependents, the employee to cover the rest. The kicker and question I have about the legality is this:

Scenario: Linda, an author, is at a party. Linda says that she is writing a book about near-death experiences. Sarah, a guest at the party, says, "Oh, I had one!" and proceeds to recount her experience to the assembled guests. Linda finishes writing her book and includes Sarah's story in it, using Sarah's real first name and some details from Sarah's life (profession, husband's first name and profession, Sarah's religious background). Is Linda legally allowed to do this without changing Sarah's name in the published book? Did Sarah waive her right to privacy by telling the story at a party? What about Sarah's personal details, which were not revealed at the party, but known to the author because of their shared social circle? Legal citations are appreciated.

For the lawyers out there: if a family physician has never performed (or offered to perform) a yearly rectal exam on a 50+ year old, are there possible grounds for malpractice if the patients develops rectal cancer 10-15 years on? Does the fact that the patient is part of a population that has an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer matter?

Recently, a nice-sounding girl posted in a local forum, asking for help over Christmas. She needed someone to come to her house and feed and administer a pill to her cats while she's away. Fearing an unscrupulous individual may try to take advantage of her (as this is a public forum), and genuinely feeling generous and helpful this Christmas season, I offered myself for help.
One small thing: I want to prepare a legal document ahead of time to ensure that both of us are protected in the event of a break-in or other calamity, and I need help!

What do "publishing rights" entail? Game maker Acclaim is
selling off publishing rights to over 200 games, and I was wondering what I'd get if I bought the rights to one. Basically: If I set up some kind of collective donation site, and we bought the rights to a game, could I then creative commons or public domain license it's content, or just the production (DVD, CD, etc)?

My fiancée and I are travelling to her country this Christmas to visit some friends and her family. I am a US citizen and she is Moldovan. She is a grad student at my university here in the US. As she is from a non-EU Eastern European country, there is a chance that she may not be allowed entry into the country due to some technicalities, even though she will have received another valid F1 visa. If she is denied entry in the airport, what can I do? Am I allowed to see her, arrange for her flight home or contact a lawyer before they force her out?

What are the legal implications of re-publishing full-text entries from another site's RSS feed? Planet sites do it for mostly legitimate purposes, and spam-logs do it for, well, spammy purposes. But are there any laws that apply? The
US copyright code doesn't assume the information is already freely available on the internet, so it seems like a grey area.

I would like to start a Comic Book Encyclopedia (Which I am calling, for lack of a better name, "Heropedia"), using mediawiki as the engine. I've been a comics fan forever, and a contributor to wikipedia. It's a great project, and I dig it a lot. However, I think branching off into a seperate project would be good for a subject with as much ephemeral information as comic books. My question is, can I use the infromation in Wikipedia pertaining to comic books, as long as the text of my site is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License?

A good friend of mine is seeking to resign from her middle school teaching job at the end of this quarter. I have a lot of teacher friends, but the question I have has so far been unanswered. Her contract has no provision for voluntary termination, doesn't mention resignation at all, and goes so far as to say that any breach of contract (the terms of which specify a duration of a full school term) may result in heretofore unspecified damages. This is in Illinois.
I know that YANAL (you are not a lawyer), dear reader, but the quandry remains: What happens when a teacher quits mid-year? Are there usually lawsuits involved in such cases? Are teachers really required to stick out an entire school year to avoid getting hauled into court for breach of contract? Any other gotchas?
