What should I know about the legality of sending a USB mixtape across international borders? Will sending 20 great songs to a dear friend get me or them in trouble? Can I do anything else to cover my ass? Assume both origin and destination are developed, non-US countries.

i am (surprise surprise) into blogs. and before i was into blogs, i was into music. now i like to post mp3s to my blog. is it a bad idea to label which song/artist it is -- as in, are there really crazy music coppers who will show up on my doorstep to arrest me?

Who can license music for download/sale? A friend came up with a wicked cool idea for selling music using the internet, but it can't be done through some affiliate mp3 link (like Amazon). We're just a couple of college guys, and we don't know any rockstars or label executives.

I have, over the past several years, become the individual that lots of people come to for music suggestions and to talk about music (most metal, but some other stuff). Much like the fine folks at Pandora. So I had the great thought of starting a podcast. However:
Mayhaps I'm missing something, but I can't find anything online that spells out how to start a music podcast legally. (More after the jump)

I own a copy of
Tres Hombres by ZZ Top. I'd like to get it into mp3 format so that I can listen to it in the car, etc. The problem is that the copy I own is on a record.
Assuming I download with bittorrent, and then the RIAA comes after me, can I use the defense that I actually already owned it, so downloading could not be considered criminal? Would it be different if I owned a record rather than a CD?
In other words, can you legally download the mp3 of an album you already own?
