I'm in Beirut, looking for some specific old recordings (1910s through 1950s). Does anyone know of a record shop or other location to look for old vinyl (Baidaphon, Arabphon, Maloof, etc...)?

Is Beirut safe right now to visit? I heard about the Ashrafieh bombing recently -- is that known as a not-so-safe area, or are attacks really an "anytime, anywhere, no safe zones" sort of thing? Aside from bombings, if there's an angry mob are they likely to react particularly violently toward Americans, or would we just blend into the scenery?

Arakfilter! I've happened across a little bottle of pricey Arak (El Rami, from Lebanon), welcome tips on its consumption. I've seen the suggestions about adding water followed by ice, though I wonder if it's the same with all grades, kinda like how one might not consume cheap and high-end tequila the same way. Thanks... and come by for a glass if you're in Dubai.

I need to find a source for travel and security advisories for locations around the world. Our organisation is too small to employ a security advisor and I don't always trust the locals. What publicly available resources do you use to prepare for travel? [more inside]

Should I go to Lebanon in April? What do I need to know if I go? I have a chance to attend a conference there, and need to decide quickly if I'm going, and if so, how long I want to spend there and if I want to go anywhere else in the area. [more inside]

Middle East Travel Advice: I'm flying to Istanbul next Sunday, and then have about 3 weeks to travel overland between Istanbul and Cairo. Where should I go? What should I see? I need some advice, and first-person experience and anecdotes are especially welcome. [more inside]

Wilder, VT versus Lebanon/Hanover NH. I recently got a job in Hanover, NH. I am looking for places to live and am trying to decide between living in the Lebanon/Hanover area or a cheaper place that I found in Wilder, VT. [more inside]

showed up in my inbox today. My links to the evangelical subculture have provided me with many icky moments but none more so than this. An acquaintance forwarded me (and 20 others) a cut and pasted article about a speech
she made at Duke University almost two years ago outlining Muslim atrocities in Lebanon during the 70s and I'm curious about the woman. Obviously someone like this is a great spokesperson for those who think Islam is bent on world domination and the destruction of all infidels. And apparently she gets quite a few speaking engagements at universities as an "expert" on the Middle East. But who is she?
After a little googling, I see the same "speech" cut and pasted into dozens of conservative blogs. And her page on Wikipedia
dates from just two weeks ago, with a bit of a revert war starting already. What's going on here?

Which charities are currently doing humanitarian aid work in the Lebanon and Gaza, and which charities are most likely to be involved in the inevitable re-building program?

I'm looking for great blogs about the Middle East and the Maghreb. I would like viewpoints from all over but am especially interested in Morocco and Lebanon. I would prefer intelligently written/academic material about the region.
