How do I spend my leave of absence from university?

I can finally put my mind away from school for about 8 months, but I feel like these 8 months will be the critical period and my last chance to gain a sense of what I want to do. [more inside]

Pls help this new mama transition back to work after first baby

Just had my first baby, in my very late 30s...yay! I took four months off once the baby came. Before the baby came, some major things happened - i got promoted to supervise my team at work -- and my mom passed away suddenly. Additionally, I had a complication with the pregnancy and ended up going on maternity leave a month early. So, before I left for maternity leave, I was not exactly 100% at work and while my boss was understanding, I may have not made the best first impression in this new position. It seems like FMLA leave doesn't account for bereavement time. What, then, do I do, after the person I'm caring for (my father) dies- just pack up and immediately fly cross country and go back to work? What about dealing with his estate? [more inside]

Maternity Leave Benefits - Canada - Vacation pay questions

This question is about maternity leave benefits (employment insurance) in Canada. Please know I have read everything online that I can and called Service Canada several times, but their recording says that there is such a high volume of calls they can't even put me on hold to talk to a human, it only gives me the option to listen to the recording or hang up. My question is regarding unpaid vacation time that is owed to me but I might not have time to take all of before starting maternity leave. Questions below. [more inside]

Work leave request policy conundrum. What's fair? What works?

My growing office of 10 is thinking about developing a vacation scheduling/leave request policy, and I'd be responsible for managing it. Staff get about 3-4 weeks vacation every year, and we're in a student service office in a university setting in the US. Before now there were no scheduling snafus, because we closed over the holidays. BUt a new policy has come down - we'll be open over the holidays. So could you tell me how your office juggles vacation leave requests in general, and what you think of it? How do you manage leave over the holidays or other popular times? Do you think seniority is fair? Or should leave be first requested, first serve? What do you think is the best way to develop a leave request policy? I'd like to have a policy that is sensible and user friendly, based on a process that is transparent and fair. HR is giving us leeway on determining a policy and at the very least, I'll ask everyone in the office what they think. But I thought I'd also ask you, hivemind. All suggestions welcome.

Leaving my life behind for a while...

So...I applied for and received a grant to learn/research/write abroad for 4 months starting in March in the field of librarianship and informatics. The grant will pay for food, shelter, and travel (4 cities in Germany, if it matters). The grant agency is going to try and help me find temporary housing. Very fortunately, my job is ok with this and excited about what I will learn, so I have a job to come back to. I am simultaneously excited and terrified. IF you've done something like this before...any recommendations? [more inside]

Pregnancy announcement at work

You all have helped me out with scripting a number of workplace situations, including lay-off, being hired, and sadly telling HR that I would not need maternity leave (which I asked anonymously, but no longer care if it became known). Plus, I've learned a lot from others' questions. So I'm hoping you can help me out again with telling my brand new employer that I am newly pregnant. [more inside]

Our first child is due in the next few weeks! This isn't a question about getting ready - we've done a lot of preparation (see inside). I want to know how you enjoyed those first crazy weeks. Should I take paid or unpaid leave during the government shutdown?

I am a contractor and am required to take leave due to the government shutdown. I have the choice of taking paid or unpaid leave. Given that I'm young with no dependents, my savings are in great shape right now, and my unused vacation will roll over into the next year, I am inclined to take leave without pay and save my paid vacation. Are there any drawbacks here that I'm not seeing? (I probably don't need to officially declare my choice until the end of the month, so long term advice in case this drags on is also helpful.)

How to get time off new job for mental health reasons

I recently started a new job that has a very strict attendance policy and I have no vacation or sick time accrued. My doctor has recommended to me that I attend a 2 week inpatient program for the mental issues I've been dealing with. I'm still thinking about it, but if I did decide to do it, who at my company do I need to speak to and what should I say so that I don't end up losing my job for taking that time off. This is my first job so your answers can assume I know absolutely nothing about how these things work.

Leave of Absence / Short-term Disability Insurance for Depression?

I've always been prone to depression as a result of my dysthymia and due to recent traumatic events, I've slumped into depression again.
