Better-paying job or mat leave coverage? Does not compute!

I have two job offers on my table, each with a sizeable pay raise above my current salary. Problem is, my current job has maternity leave benefits, and I don't think these two new jobs do. [more inside]

Work leave request policy conundrum. What's fair? What works?

My growing office of 10 is thinking about developing a vacation scheduling/leave request policy, and I'd be responsible for managing it. Staff get about 3-4 weeks vacation every year, and we're in a student service office in a university setting in the US. Before now there were no scheduling snafus, because we closed over the holidays. BUt a new policy has come down - we'll be open over the holidays. So could you tell me how your office juggles vacation leave requests in general, and what you think of it? How do you manage leave over the holidays or other popular times? Do you think seniority is fair? Or should leave be first requested, first serve? What do you think is the best way to develop a leave request policy? I'd like to have a policy that is sensible and user friendly, based on a process that is transparent and fair. HR is giving us leeway on determining a policy and at the very least, I'll ask everyone in the office what they think. But I thought I'd also ask you, hivemind. All suggestions welcome.

Leaving my life behind for a while...

So...I applied for and received a grant to learn/research/write abroad for 4 months starting in March in the field of librarianship and informatics. The grant will pay for food, shelter, and travel (4 cities in Germany, if it matters). The grant agency is going to try and help me find temporary housing. Very fortunately, my job is ok with this and excited about what I will learn, so I have a job to come back to. I am simultaneously excited and terrified. IF you've done something like this before...any recommendations? [more inside]

Pregnancy announcement at work

You all have helped me out with scripting a number of workplace situations, including lay-off, being hired, and sadly telling HR that I would not need maternity leave (which I asked anonymously, but no longer care if it became known). Plus, I've learned a lot from others' questions. So I'm hoping you can help me out again with telling my brand new employer that I am newly pregnant. [more inside]

Did you enjoy your parental leave?

Our first child is due in the next few weeks! This isn't a question about getting ready - we've done a lot of preparation (see inside). I want to know how you enjoyed those first crazy weeks. Were you able to relax into the sleep deprivation and rhythm-less newborn life? Do you look back on those days fondly? We expect to be tired and frazzled, but we want to intentionally savor this special time. We will have ~8 weeks at home together with our baby. Tell me how you did it. [more inside]

Should I take paid or unpaid leave during the government shutdown?

I am a contractor and am required to take leave due to the government shutdown. I have the choice of taking paid or unpaid leave. Given that I'm young with no dependents, my savings are in great shape right now, and my unused vacation will roll over into the next year, I am inclined to take leave without pay and save my paid vacation. Are there any drawbacks here that I'm not seeing? (I probably don't need to officially declare my choice until the end of the month, so long term advice in case this drags on is also helpful.)

How to get time off new job for mental health reasons

I recently started a new job that has a very strict attendance policy and I have no vacation or sick time accrued. My doctor has recommended to me that I attend a 2 week inpatient program for the mental issues I've been dealing with. I'm still thinking about it, but if I did decide to do it, who at my company do I need to speak to and what should I say so that I don't end up losing my job for taking that time off. This is my first job so your answers can assume I know absolutely nothing about how these things work.

Leave of Absence / Short-term Disability Insurance for Depression?

I've always been prone to depression as a result of my dysthymia and due to recent traumatic events, I've slumped into depression again. My work productivity and quality suffered as a result and I ended up breaking down to my manager, sobbing my eyes out and explaining my situation. I was even developing suicidal ideations and at this point, I've taken a little over a week off of work. In the mean time, I've seen a doctor, a psychiatrist, and a therapist for my depression and I've been prescribed Pristiq. I can propose my own maternity leave plan, now what?

I work on salary for a tiny company in CA. I am pregnant. No one has ever been pregnant at my company, so I can propose a Maternity Leave plan that works for me and works for them. can my employer delay my raise because i'm pregnant?

my employer recently told me that a number of people in the company are underpaid relative to industry standards and will be getting salary adjustments. The good new: I am one of those people. The bad news: Everyone else who is getting a raise is scheduled to get theirs on january 1st; I, on the other hand, was told that mine would start on May 1st, when I return from my 3 month maternity leave (February to the end of march). Is this legal to treat me differently because I am pregnant? Note that I will continue to be paid during my maternity leave, as this is company policy. In effect, they are postponing my raise by 4 months. I do plan to return to work and have told them this. Any advice is appreciated!
