Tall Leather Frye Boots: Do I need boot socks?

Tall leather Frye boots: do I need tall boot socks with them? I'm thinking about getting a pair of Frye boots, and for some reason, the tallest boots are around $100 bucks cheaper than the lower rise boots at my local shoe store. Can I wear regular ankle length socks with the taller boots without chaffing on the back of my calf, or do I need full length boot socks to be comfy? [more inside]
