how to clean the leather seats in my toyota highlander

i have a 7 year old and a 9 year old and the backseat of my highlander has gotten filthy. i took it to get detailed and i was surprised at how little effect it had on the leather seats ... the grime is gone but they still look dirty. i want to get to work on it myself this week... any suggestions on how to clean leather car seats?

Leather Jacket Staining White Shirts

I've had a black leather jacket for four or five years, and the jacket itself is probably twenty years old. I never had it stain anything until I began wearing white button-up shirts to work, but now I have a bunch of shirts with dirty collars that don't wash out. What can I do? [more inside]

Finding a lost finding (Jewelry)

I'm seeking a specific silver hook and eye clasp for a fisherman bracelet I lost. The hook piece has a swordfish embossed on it. I have looked high and low on the big jewelry, jewelry and beading supply sites and etsy but no luck. Picture of clasp Immense sentimental value! I've seen Ask MeFi work some crazy magic in the past, I'd be eternally grateful for your help!

How do I take the best care of my favorite leather jacket?

A couple of years ago I found the best black leather jacket ever, and I diligently applied some sort of waterproofing/leather protectant spray every few months for the first year. It's been pretty well-loved since then, and is starting to show slight signs of wear--nothing major, but enough so that I don't want it to get worse. How can I restore it to its former glory and keep it protected so I don't have to think about buying another one for many years? [more inside]

Men's leather belts — where's the sweet spot re: "cheap" and "durable"?

All my life I've bought cheap-ass vaguely-leather-ish belts (like, the $20 ones from that rack next to the cash register at the el-cheapo big box shoe store) and they've always started to warp within three months and started falling to pieces within six. I don't think I'm unusually hard on my belts. I think the ones I'm buying just suck balls and I should bite the bullet and buy nicer ones. So: How much more would I have to spend to get one that didn't suck? What would it cost me to get a leather belt that would last two years without warping or splitting? Five years? Ten? Infinity?

Talk us in to or out of this...

We found a terrific high quality tufted leather coffee table leather ottoman bench thingie on consignment- this particular one runs around $500 retail. The leather is the soft non scratch kind in dark brown/ black. It looks brand new. We love the idea of it because we have a little human coming and it minimizes the worry about him getting hurt if he hits his head on it. It suits our need for a play table, changing table, foot rest and general decor item. The price it $140. Here is the rub: we have 3 cats. [more inside]

Help me not ruin my shoes so fast!

My favorite pair of shoes in the entire world, this pair that there only seems to be one of in existence, are just a smidge too narrow. They're 11D, and feet would fit best in an 11E. That smidge is giving me one mean callous, but more importantly the widest part of my foot, tipped with that callous, has already worn through the leather lining and might have burst through the calfskin outer if I hadn't caught it in time. What can I do to not ruin these beautiful, expensive shoes any further? [more inside]

Help me get my leather painting fixed.

My wife has this leather painting/art kind of thing which was made by taking a hide of leather and cutting out patterns in it. I think it was then painted a bit. It was made in Thailand originally. The problem is that it got stored somewhere damp and the bottom bit has shrunk, so now it is not rectangular but more rhombussy shaped. (Not a lot, but noticeably). Is this repairable? I mean, leather stretches right? If so, where would you go to get it fixed? I don't even know what sort of craftsman to ask.

do you know a good leather worker?

I'm looking for a dark, well made, quality leather wrist cuff/bracelet that's about an inch thick with a snap closure. The internet seems flooded with crappy cuffs with lots of junk stuck on them. Can you recommend a shop/person? I lean more towards something that looks vintage/distressed rather than new, stiff, and polished. This is for a man, but think more unisex.
