Today my laptop's backlight stopped working. The screen is visible, but very dim. I can't repair it immediately (if it's even worth it). Does anyone have any tips for lighting the screen to make it more visible? Shining a penlight didn't seem to help much, because the screen is so reflective. [more inside]

Is this a scam? I'm looking at buying a LCD HDTV and found this offer online: Samsung LA40B750 40 in. LCD TV for AUD$ 1,450.00 from www.marthaelectronics.com
How can I determine this is a legitimate firm? Google searches offer no consumer reports or angry bloggers, but it seems too good to be true...

Should I fix my LCD TV or replace it? Our 18-month-old LCD TV has died. Tech support says it's probably the "main board." We're outside the warranty period. Repairs (including shipping) will probably run to at least half the cost of simply replacing it. [more inside]

Does anyone know where I could order a pre-made glass/plastic sheet or a resin to coat a translucent piece of plastic or glass? Something similar to the color and tint they use on the lens of those cheesy blue blocker sunglasses.
I need to make a screen with this tint for the front of a computer monitor. Maybe there is something pre-made as well?

Audiovisual question. What will happen if I plug the HDMI output of a Sony Playstation 3 to the DVI port of this max. 1280x1024 pixel LCD projector? I would of course have a HDMI-DVI cable. Will I be able to display 720p or 1080i stuff? And if it doesn't work, are there devices out there that downsample HD so I can use the projector for pseudo-HD movies and games? I really do not want to buy an HDTV. If it matters, a PDF manual for the projector (2.2 MB) is here.

So I was taking a walk this morning with my camera bag. My camera bag decided it wanted to experience it some freedom and slipped off my shoulder. In the process, my Canon 10D had a meeting with the sidewalk. I now have a busted LCD screen; this makes me sad and unable to operate half the camera. Does anyone have any repair options for broken LCD screen on a Canon 10D in Houston, TX?

My Executive Director wants a fancy new LCD projector. Something small, and with the possibility of direct USB support. He's got this idea that he *should* be able to put a file on a USB key and then just plug it into the projector, and not need a laptop to present. This strikes me as a scary proposition, one fraught with the possibility of failure. The thing is, I only have my own skepticism, no hard experience. Can anyone out there provide stories of experiences with this type of projector? Any pros or cons? Recommended projectors?

The LCD displays I have for my desktop and laptop are both very sensitive to viewing angle, especially up/down. Viewing angle seems to affect brightness and gamma. Are all LCD monitors this way? If so, does it do any good at all to try to calibrate them? Which LCD monitors, if any, are good for photo editing? Or does everyone still just use CRTs? [more inside]

I bought a damaged LCD monitor off ebay.
I haven't received it yet, but you can see a picture here.
It appears that it has sustained some impact that destroyed some of the transistors or something like that. That is fine with me for the usage I envision, however, I'd like to know if this damage will pose any fire or health hazards and , assuming no more physical shocks to the monitor, is bound to get worse with time.

Best HDMI switcher out there? (plasma TV only has one port) I'd like at least three, maybe four ports. Remote control not really necessary, I'd like to have maximum image quality though and I can spend, within reason, to obtain it. I see they're all between 50 and 100 dollars, maybe there are some known lemons out there? Maybe there's a kickass brand? Thanks.
