I'm looking for free OS X or Windows software that will allow me to draw a room and furniture to scale and move things around to find the best layout. Extra points for simplicity and ease of use.

I'm looking for a program that will help me tech edit sewing patterns. Specifically, I want to be able to check that the pattern calls for the correct amount of fabric. This involves putting flat shapes together and seeing how big they are when they're combined. (It's all very SAT, with a touch of Tetris.) [more inside]

I'm founding a small magazine, with some friends. What software should we use to lay out the magazine? I think we want something like Quark. It needs to be freeware, 'cause we're starting out really small, with minimal income (we'll just cover printing).

I have been hired to layout a newsletter for print and for publication online. There is an editor who compiles the articles, edits for length, and etc. In this situation, who should be responsible for the copy editor duties? I find that it is a pain to finish the layout and then hear back from the editor that there are several spelling, punctuation, and line break mistakes that need to be corrected (which is generally hard to do in DTP software). Is it unreasonable of me to expect that the copy-editing should be done by the editor and not the layout person?
