How much competence/sharpness can I reasonably expect from an attorney?

I've been through four lawyers (two firms) in the last two years for the same matter. Each time, they keep either making errors or overlooking things and priorities, which I find frustrating. I feel like these things would not happen with an attorney in the place I used to live. Are my expectations around this reasonable? [more inside]

Conflict of interest, but what could possibly go wrong?

Our lawyer, who is amazing and awesome, told me this morning she was considering bidding at the same auction we will bid at this weekend. She hadn't realised until we sent her the contract to look over. Obviously this is a conflict of interest, and my first reaction was that we should find a new lawyer, but on more careful reflection I'm failing to think of how it could really matter. What could actually go wrong here? [more inside]

How can I get a dealership to pay me for a car I sold them?

I sold my car to a Nissan dealership last Monday, November 10 for $22,000. At the time I owed $15,276.47 to Nissan Finance. I checked my account there today and now I owe $15,284.80, so the loan is still not paid off and it's still accumulating interest. Also, it's been five days and I haven't gotten a check for the $6,723.53 remaining after the loan payoff. [more inside]

One Mistake Changes Everything?

I'm trying to get to the bottom of something that happened over the weekend -- to nutshell, was cuffed and placed in a holding cell and charged with an OWI. Never been in trouble before. Looking for a lawyer, but seem to either be told that they have fees that I could never afford to pay, or that they can get me into a diversion program which I'm pretty sure is offered to first time offenders anyway. Help? Details behind cut. [more inside]

Statute of limitations is up on a medical product-liability lawsuit?

Hi all, When I was 10, I took stomach drug called Propulcid, which gave me permanent Epilepsy. I am now 26 and want to sue the makers, but the statute of limitations in Maryland ended at age 21 (I'm 26 now). I want to sue, but given these limitations, no contingency-based lawyer will take my case. What can I do? Thanks!

burned out lawyer rethinking a new career in teaching

I just left law after 18 years as a sole practitioner. I am burned out. I'm not very money oriented, more into helping people and socializing. I like work that has a beginning and end. I've never been a good employee. I thought that I would like to become a high school social science teacher and I now have a license to teach. I'm a 54 yo female. [more inside]

Yesterday, my partner slipped and fell while dropping our kid off at preschool. Every possible option about how to handle this makes me uneasy. What's the return on investment

A motor vehicle accident occurs in which one driver makes a left turn while another car is in the intersection, not giving the other car enough time to stop. The left-turn maker is cited at the scene and apologizes. His insurance company offers a certain amount as a settlement, minus 25% (~$1,000) for "comparable negligence", meaning the not-left-turn-maker was 25% responsible. Is it worth it to get a lawyer to argue/negotiate on the basis that 25% is a unfairly high determination of responsibility? [more inside]

You are not my lawyer -- and maybe he shouldn't be either.

Legal ethics filter: I work in the computer lab at a public library in the midwest. A patron comes in semi-regularly and shows me his Florida State Bar ID as proof of identity. He is almost always doing work with legal documents, and often has clients with him. The Florida State Bar says that he has been a member for about six months, but he's ineligible to practice law in the state of Florida. Am I under any obligation to contact the Florida State Bar (or some other regulatory association), since I'm not in Florida?
