I volunteer for a non-profit organization. We've had a work agreement with a small company (Basically one or two guys) to do Drupal development work for a year. Short story: the point person in our organization is suddenly no longer with us (deceased), the developer has terminated the contract, almost none of the specifications are complete. "Agile development! Hand waving! You don't understand." We're out a LOT of money and he is holding any not yet tested code hostage for another 15K in billing. All invoices past (approved by previous guy) and present (which I don't want to approve) consist of a single line: "X number of developer hours at Y rate = gimme Z money". They are autogenerated since the number of hours is always the max allowable under the work agreement and still addressed to the deceased. We are going to the lawyers soon, but... [more inside]
Please help my friend not get screwed over by his own lawyer in recovering dormant bank acct funds. Here was my last ask metafilter question. For my friend who had his Mexican HSBC bank account closed, and Someone me-mailed me and recommend he find a lawyer on the US Embassy site which he did. It seems HSBC closed the account because it was dormant (something similar to this situation maybe?). The lawyer said he thinks this was illegal, and that the lawyer has contacted top executives at the bank and that the lawyer can recover the funds if my friend can give 30% of said recovered funds to the lawyer as a fee (this fee seems exorbitant). Half to be paid now, and half to be paid upon obtaining the funds in the dormant account. This seems like a huge fee, for which the funds that are probably legally available to my friend by some other simpler means. My friend can't go to mexico for at least several months, and when he calls HSBC in Mexico they say they can't give him any more specific information about his account unless he comes to a branch in person, in Mexico. Any advice on how can pursue this without getting hosed for 30% of his own money?
I've got an unusual set of circumstances involving student loan debt... could really use the advice of a lawyer. Anyone know a good student loan lawyer in the greater PHX metro area?
My friend has an HSBC Mexico account, that had about 40,000 dollars in it.. he didn't use the account for a year, he called today to get a new checkbook, and found out the account had zero balance in may of 2013, and the account was closed. HSBC Mexico said they can't give more information unless he goes in person to a branch in Mexico. He is willing to hire a lawyer, or Power of attorney, or someone to investigate this in Mexico who legally represent him. He is currently far from mexico and can't make it there any time soon. His mom is in Mexico, can she get power of attorney? Any advice on how to do this? How can he go about finding a lawyer in Mexico who can help him? Or what actions can he take? He suspects fraudulent activity as he did login to his internet banking last year and saw all his money there.

What are some first steps that should be taken when a settlement check written to a client (resident in NYC) by an NYC law firm bounces? I would like to register a single member LLC for the purpose of selling a software I developed and other programming related services. I was quoted , by a lawyer, 600 dollars on top of state registration fees. For consultations they charge around 400 an hour. There are several services I saw online where you pay for a monthly subscription and they claim you get free or cheap access to lawyers , and the LLC registration there is only 100 dollars (legalzoom, rocketlawyer, nolo etc) I could also fill out and send out the forms myself, but then I have to worry about the operating agreement etc. So, one idea I had was to bargain with the lawyer to include some hours of discounted consultation if I used them for the initial registration. But I am open for suggestions!
We think our lawyer, who has been working our case for over two years, may be incompetent, but we find it hard to determine for sure. He seems very compliant in regard to the other side, while being subject to brush-offs and delaying tactics from the other side. Even if he is incompetent, we're not sure what's involved in changing lawyers. Perhaps you can shed some light on this. [more inside]
I decided that I want to be a lawyer. It was a childhood goal although for some time, I was quite lost as to what I wanted to be when I complete university. Over the past year or so, I have been leaning more and more towards law but people keep telling me not to do it because being a lawyer sucks. I like reading, researching and analyzing. I like writing. I like reading court cases. This should make me a good fit for being a lawyer... right? What should I ask myself if I want to determine whether or not law school would be a good fit and eventual path for my career? [more inside]
I want to create a legal document declaring in robust legalese that all of my intellectual property (except works specifically noted) shall enter the public domain upon my death and a website to host (or link to p2p copies of) archives of those works. I want the legal documents to make it easy for other people to use or adapt for themselves and ideally for the site to act as a host or tracker for them to post to. I'm seeking legal and technical advice as well as general input in order to make this happen. [more inside]
My friend is having an employment situation crisis (Washington state), and it's difficult to find a lawyer to consult on the weekend. Back in 2007 in San Francisco I was assaulted and had to have some not insignificant reconstructive surgery as a result. The cops were cops and declined to press charges because the guy lived a couple counties over even though I had multiple witnesses. I had a great (friend of a friend) pro bono lawyer who got me a civil judgement (in default) to the tune of $300k. However I've never seen a dime. The guy held no property on record and didn't even have a steady job with a paycheck from which I could garnish his wages. Clearly some time has passed and I'd like advice about looking into this again and seeing if I could actually get my hands on any of this money. I'd like to not bother my original lawyer as she did great by me, but made it clear that she had taken the case as far as she could. I know, YANML and YANAL, etc.
My ex-girlfriend assaulted me, damaged my property, and kicked in a door to a public establishment where I was hiding from her. What's going to happen now? [more inside]

Asking for a friend. She has decided to divorce her husband after 21 years of marriage. Her lawyer has said that, although he makes six figures annually, because he is retirement age and has many debts, she is not entitled to very much. You are, of course, not my Australian lawyer. However, my SO may soon be hiring one for a suit against a hospital. To ensure that the lawyer we're hiring is the kind that we think we're hiring, she's asked me what the difference (if any) is between a no-win, no fee lawyer, and a lawyer that is hired under a contingency agreement. I recently met with a lawyer to get a document reviewed. I had sent him my document that morning to look over before we met. At the end of our meeting he said once I had put in his suggested changes I could send him the document and he'd look over it again. His charge was $60, which I immediately paid. About a week later I sent him the document with his changes incorporated to look over again. If it matters, I had added a clause of maybe three sentences to the document that wasn't in the first version. I've now received another invoice for $60 from the lawyer, charging me for a second review. I didn't expect to get billed again since he was the one who offered to look at it again. Is he justified in billing me for a second review? What should I do if he's not justified?
