How can we respond to a bounced $16k check from a law firm in NYC?

What are some first steps that should be taken when a settlement check written to a client (resident in NYC) by an NYC law firm bounces? Aside from this Better Business Bureau page about filing complaints against lawyers, is there any oversight mechanism, or regulatory body, or state or city office that can help to resolve this? LLC registration, Lawyer, myself, or online service

I would like to register a single member LLC for the purpose of selling a software I developed and other programming related services. I was quoted , by a lawyer, 600 dollars on top of state registration fees. For consultations they charge around 400 an hour. There are several services I saw online where you pay for a monthly subscription and they claim you get free or cheap access to lawyers , and the LLC registration there is only 100 dollars (legalzoom, rocketlawyer, nolo etc) I could also fill out and send out the forms myself, but then I have to worry about the operating agreement etc. So, one idea I had was to bargain with the lawyer to include some hours of discounted consultation if I used them for the initial registration. But I am open for suggestions!

"Works on Contingency? No, money down!" How does this work in Australia?

You are, of course, not my Australian lawyer. However, my SO may soon be hiring one for a suit against a hospital. To ensure that the lawyer we're hiring is the kind that we think we're hiring, she's asked me what the difference (if any) is between a no-win, no fee lawyer, and a lawyer that is hired under a contingency agreement. Help me prepare to talk to a real estate lawyer.

I will be seeking a consultation with a real estate lawyer to talk about an issue with my property line which is the side of my house. Unfortunately there is a negative gradient and a lot of water coming onto my property (and into my basement) from the adjoining property. I have an easement for "ingress & egress" on that property. The landowner there has not responded to my repeated requests to correct the negative gradient. [more inside]

Tell me why I should or should not incorporate in Ontario, Canada

I'm a web developer in Toronto who is currently operating as a sole proprietor. A prospective new client would really like to hire me for a major new project, but they can only deal with incorporated companies and cannot hire a sole prop. I'm looking for advice on incorporating from a) people in Canada and especially Ontario, but also from b) anyone who has any relevant advice about the experience of becoming an Inc., even if you are not Canadian. Yes, I will be engaging an accountant or lawyer for specific advice if I do decide to move forward, so I'm not worried that some specific advice may not be appropriate for my jurisdiction: I'm just trying to get a broad picture of what it's like (and some recommendations for lawyers/accountants). How to protect an inheritance/gift from taxation?

My dad passed away this year and my mom has very generously decided to gift the house to my sister and I rather than. The house is in Canada, I live in the U.S. (Permanent residence). My sister and brother in law bought my half of the house when the mortgage was due (approximately April 1st) so I now suddenly have a 6 digit lump sum of cash in a Canadian account. I have not signed anything yet. I want to protect this from taxation, I also don't want to jeopardize my permanent residence status or potential citizenship. I know I need a lawyer, but what kind and how do I find a good one? I am in Wisconsin, particularly Eau Claire since that's probably important.
