From a friend: I received a letter stating that my landlord has not paid the outstanding expenses due for the apartment and that I am now required by law to stop paying him for rent and send my rent directly to this debt collector. What should I do? [more inside]

Lease break legal-filter. Former landlord's making ridiculous security deposit deductions and backing out on a written agreement to refund pro-rated rent after asking me to move out early for a new tenant. Is this worth going to court about? [more inside]

Virginia-tenant-filter: I moved out, they sent me a big bill with a short deadline. Dispute damages first, lawyer later? Or lawyer now for the dispute? [more inside]

I live in the state of pennsylvania in montgomery county.I rented apartment from craigslist on a verbal monthly lease with $650 security deposit. After 8 months I gave the landlord moving out notice of 30 days to find a new tenant. its been almost 11 months and she has not given me $300 of the initial security deposit back.
I cleaned the house and she had no issues.
Is there any way i can get the money back. I have tried to contact the person multiple times through email and phone but no reply.

My previous landlord never returned my security deposit ($1,650) last autumn. I live in Chicago. Do I get an attorney (and if so how do I choose one) or do I take it to small claims court myself? What are the pros/cons of either approach? [more inside]
