Getting divorced. Lawyer or mediation?

Getting divorced in Illinois. I still love my husband, but cannot remain married to him for many reasons, one of which being that I can no longer take care of him emotionally and financially without ruining my own life. My first instinct was to try to settle this using mediation or collaborative divorce (I don't even understand 100% what this is, honestly). Mostly because I feel enormously guilty for leaving, don't want to make it harder on him, and hope that we can still be a part of each other's lives. No kids, so custody isn't an issue. But there are some major financial issues, and some of the things he's said worry me. Sorry, this is kind of a long one. [more inside]

Bankruptcy attorney near Lynchburg, VA?

My mother is in between work right now, with very sporradic temp gigs that don't pay enough. I think she needs to talk with a bankruptcy attorney, but she's ashamed and intimidated. I'd like to help her by giving her actual referrals. Difficulty: I'm long-distance from her. She is located in Lynchburg, VA. General advice would also be welcome--for example, how long might she be able to drag out the foreclosure and still live in her home? Details inside! [more inside]

Does that make sense?

Debtfilter: Employer provides signing bonus structured as forgivable loan (forgiven if employee stays with firm long enough). Employee leaves soon after, and employer seeks to collect on loan. Employee is now a broke grad student, so employer offers to defer collection of loan until grad school is complete. Question: If length of time in grad school exceeds state statute of limitations on original loan, does this mean the loan will discharge itself before it can be collected? [more inside]

Get me out of my dead-end legal job.

Help me figure out to do with myself. I'm an early-30's lawyer with school loans well into the 6-digit range. I live in NYC. I hate what I do, I know what I like and am good at, but have no idea how to get from what I'm doing now to what I need to be doing. [more inside]
