I know I need a lawyer to deal with this, but I'm hoping that knowledgeable MeFi-ites can help me find the language needed to correctly describe the problem and my desired outcome, and perhaps give some advice as to how to find the right sort of lawyer. Warning, this is long...

A friend of mine is trying to remember the name of a documentary they once saw and Google has failed them. I'm forever touting the skill and speed with which the AskMe community solves dilemmas like these, so don't fail me now! Here's what she asked me:
I saw a documentary about a man who was representing himself in a lawsuit or series of lawsuits -- I think the government had filed them against him for sending threatening letters. Something about defending his land and eminent domain... He had a wife that he met in a foreign country. She was a lot younger than him and she moved to the US and married him. They were both chain smokers and used a plastic fork as a cigarette holder. They lived in a trailer that was a mess and full of document boxes of his "research" for his case. And they had a few big dogs.

I've been called as a witness in a lawsuit against my former employer (MegaCorp: a large, multi-national well-known media company). I have not worked for the company in many years, but have been in constant contact as this lawsuit was threatened before I resigned.

Re the Justice Department joining the lawsuit against Lance Armstrong--can the federal government force the sale of assets to pay off a judgment?. That is, hypothetically, if Armstrong has $8 million in non-cash assets (houses, land, cars, etc), and he's being sued for $15 million and loses, can the government liquidate all of his assets to at least pay off a part of that amount? Armstrong is a disgrace and a jerk, but could he also become a pauper?

So Samsung has been ordered to pay Apple ONE BILLION DOLLARS. Let's assume this is final, and ignores appeal, etc. How would this actually happen? I can't see it being a big check delivered on stage. Bank transfer? Scheduled payments over the course of XX years? (Freightcars loaded with pennies delivered in spite?)

Help me think straight. I was attacked by a loose German Shepherd while out on a walk with my husband and our two small leashed dogs. What should I do next? The owner is in denial and I am concerned for the safety of myself and others. I think that if I threaten a lawsuit I could scare her into building a fence and reinforcing her door. I'm interested in getting her to take action to keep her dog enclosed or to take it to a behaviorist, not trying to win money in a settlement.

Please help me understand this court case (if it is one). I have made some attempts to try and find help with the California court noted here but I've been told "that's not us" and am a little embarrassed with my attempts to chase this down. I've also emailed the attorneys and other people involved but they are not responding perhaps due to the controversial nature of the case.

I improved a website for a business. The client was satisfied throughout the project and at launch 1 yr ago. But he fell out with his partners and they're threatening to sue me. I billed about $5k for the site. The site now does everything he wanted - consistent navigation, improved graphics, data driven pages (it had been over 100 html pages with little consistency among them).
Can I be sued for violating some best practices like not saving Includes in their own directory, having some HTML tags inside a SQL database, leaving test code and unused files on the production site and not optimizing queries, commenting-out unused code instead of removing it? Can I be sued for leaving the site vulnerable to SQL Injection attacks even if there were no actual damages?

We have begun building a house, we have the plans, the lot and the builder. No ground broken yet. We signed the contract with the builder. When securing the financing, we were told that the builder has several liens and they will not finance us if we use him. Based on the title search, they said no bank would give us money if he is involve. Could he win if he sues for breach of contract? Can we legally back out of this contract in light of these circumstances?

I took Accutane for acne in high school, and in college I was diagnosed with GERD and will probably have to take Nexium for the rest of my life. I never associated the two, but this evening I noticed one of those sleazy "sue prescription drug companies!" ads that said that Accutane has been linked to GI disorders. Is this worth pursuing, and if so, how should I go about it?

A web host has refused to comply with a DMCA notice I've sent. I am interested in filing a lawsuit, but the web host (an individual/small company, not one of the big ones) has claimed I'd need to file in the federal court located in the state where he is incorporated. Is this true? Why can't I file in my own state if I'm protecting my own copyrighted material?
