Tell me about life when a JD doesn't open doors to a career in law.

By now, it's pretty well understood that a law degree and bar membership does not guarantee that one will be able to have a legal career. The law school scamblog movement has done a great job of exposing and denouncing the abuses committed by law schools. But while some news stories profile law graduates who struggle after earning their degree, the overwhelming majority of unsuccessful lawyers just seem to vanish. Where are the stories of the people who gave up on the law because they couldn't find work? [more inside]

Prospects for UK law grad in the US?

I currently attend a top 2 law school in the UK (no prize for guessing which), and am interested in working in the US after I graduate. While I am aware that I will be eligible to take the bar exam in NY and California with a degree from a common law jurisdiction, would my prospects of landing a law firm gig be appreciably augmented if I go for an LLM (or perhaps even a JD) at a US law school? What is the most effective way to study in law school?

Tips for oral arguments in moot court?

So I've been selected to participate in a major moot court at my law school (to be judged by a member of the Court of Appeal), but I'm totally clueless about oral arguments (I was selected on the basis of my written brief). Does anyone have any practical tips to share with a first-time mooter? I've been told to speak slowly and answer all questions directly, but are there any non-obvious things that I should be doing/aware of as well? What would be the best way to pivot questions back to the main theme of my case? Any help/advice welcome!

How bad is the job market for lawyers (especially with T6 degrees)?

Peaking probably 2 or 3 years ago, tales of employment doom for lawyers were everywhere across the internet, with various stories of newly-minted graduates who were $150-200k in debt and either jobless, or working at 40-60k/year jobs where they could never pay back their debt. I remember reading predictions that this wasn't merely a usual and temporary fluctuation, but was a sign of a permanent contraction in the legal job market. I was speaking with an acquaintance who recently graduated from Harvard Law School, who told me that in her opinion, the negativity was overblown, and everyone that she knew in her graduating class had either a job or a fellowship without too much difficulty. This got me wondering whether the situation now is still as bleak as it was a couple of years ago - for lawyers generally, but especially for lawyers from top schools. Are lawyers generally still in such difficult straits in terms of finding a job? [more inside]

Is a JD 4 me?

Law school: over the years you've considered going to law school but were always put off by the horror stories of unemployed JDs. As a PhD student in another field, you took related classes at the law school and worked with their social policy program. You now have the benefit of knowing you are suited to and enjoy the law school environment. You drop out of PhD program to save the world, take career assesment tests which show you are service and cause driven, and work through guides to the non-profit sector. Most of your dream jobs in non-profit either require or prefer a JD. If you have no desire or intention to ever work as a practicing attorney, be part of a firm, but instead want to have a job like "court program manager" for a justice non-profit, is law school the next step? Is it the only possible path? Do those unemployment numbers for law school grads reflect all grads or only those not hired to practice?

Legal Writing and Advocacy

Hi , I was wondering if any mefiers could help advise me on potentially choosing a certain module for my llb (undergraduate law) option. I was thinking of choosing the legal writing and advocacy option, but I am not sure. Has anyone any idea of what is usually expected in a module such as this? It strikes me as an option very similar that provided in American law schools. How are these usually assessed? The naive bone in me is entertaining the prospect of a slightly less harsh marking criteria compared to the substantive core modules I shall be studying as well; but I could be wrong. My course book mentions the break down of the module as follows: Legal Writing and Advocacy: - Reflective Learning Journal (40%) - Response to Consultation Document (30%) - Oral Presentation 1 - (15%) - Oral Presentation 2 - (15%) [more inside]
