Life with a robotic lawn mower

I'm considering investing in a robotic lawn mower. Technical specs and short reviews are easy to find, but I'm having trouble sorting out if the investment is worth it, or if I should rather buy a high-end "normal" lawn mower or possibly a riding one. How is life with a robotic lawn mower? [more inside]

Is My Lawnmower Dead?

I have a Craftsman mower with a 6.5 HP 4-cycle engine. Last weekend I changed the oil, put on a new blade, cleaned it up and generally got it ready for the new season. It started right up when I tested it. [more inside]

Thorny, sharp-leaved plant with yellow flowers?

I (foolishly) let a plant with thorns and sharp leaves get rather large next to my house. Now I'm finding it tough to tear it all out because it's so well established. Can anybody help me identify the plant so I can try to figure out if I'm killing enough of it so that it won't come back? I live in Colorado. A picture of the plant is here and a close up of the yellow flowers/leaves is here. [more inside]

My lawn! My perfect lawn! It's... under attack.

So, about a year and a half ago, we bought a house! Awesome. For the first time, I have a back yard and a front yard and a lawn and... stuff, and I don't know, maybe because I'm old and boring now, I've started to give a crap about making my lawn look nice. Something is really starting to piss me off... [more inside]

Proper way to store stinky fertilizer

I am a new homeowner and need to know how to store bags of fertilizer so they don't stink up my yard. I know that this may seem like a silly question, but please bear with me. I am a first time home owner and for the first time in my life I have to figure these things out. My home has a big garden and lawn. I am in southern California so it is used weekly by my gardener at this time. I have hired to previous owner's gardener since he is so familiar with the care of the many different plants in the yard. The previous owner kindly left me with big bags of fertilizer which the gardener has started to use. They are propped up against the back of the garage and after a couple of rainstorms, it has gotten REALLY STINKY. Like, I was wondering if previous owner was hiding a body in the yard before I realized it was the fertilizer! Ha! [more inside]

To cut or not to cut (my grass)

We have thin and bare spots in our lawn so I had a professional reseed it using "slit" seeding. The problem is the old grass is at least eight or nine inches tall and really needs to be cut, but the new grass still looks too fragile to walk on. So how long should I wait before I mow it? I'm concerned that letting the older grass get too long will make my lawn become coarse or cause other problems.
