Tell me about electric lawnmowers.

We are getting to the time of year where I am going to have to start mowing the lawn. Our old reel-style mower died at the end of last year, and it kind of sucked anyway. I do not want to mess with gas. Do you have an electric lawnmower, either corded or battery powered? Is it great? Is it terrible? Please tell me about it. [more inside]

A great sod debate (in my head)

I have a backyard that has been troubled ever since we moved in. It was clear at that time that lawn of some sort was not doing very well. We tried adding new good soil and starting grass from seed that supposedly was the right kind for our area and the fact that the back gets little direct sunlight. [more inside]

Healing tent-burn - the lawn edition

Heyso, I have this behemoth tent that my daughter and I used for camping and it comes in a tiny little duffel bag so I've been procrastinating on getting it back in the bag. Help with planting beds?

I have been carving some planting beds out of my lawn, and they actually look pretty good! But since I had to rip up some sod, they are about a half an inch lower than the lawn itself. Is this ok, or should planting beds be level with the lawn itself?

Life with a robotic lawn mower

I'm considering investing in a robotic lawn mower. My lawn is a terrible mess of weeds, luckily in a neighborhood where almost everyone has a terrible lawn so I'm not bringing down property values. How do I fix it, preferably without pesticides? Instructions on the care of a domesticated fairy ring.

My family's been living in this house for about ten years, and early on I noticed we had a fairy ring on the property. When our kids were little, they loved the fairy ring and asked me to mow around it, which I've done for the past six or seven years. This year I noticed that it seemed to expand. Since I don't cut it, there's a circle of longer grass from last year inside of where the fairy ring showed up this spring, as if the ring grew a little bit larger. I also noticed a smaller fairy ring, about a quarter of the size, seemed to be growing about fifteen yards away. I guess what I'm wondering is, by not mowing over the fairy ring, are we helping it get bigger, maybe even spawning baby fairy rings? What do you know about the care, feeding, and life cycle of the domesticated fairy ring? [more inside]

Permanent lawn games?

We are looking to install a permanent lawn game in our front yard (well hidden from street). We have basically enough room to put in a badminton court, and will likely do that. Unless we get a more awesome idea from you guys! Please share any suggestions. We are not willing to install grass for this. It will be either on hard clay soil, sand, gravel or pavers. I want to make sure I have collected any potentially awesome ideas before I put I all the work. Thanks!

Help me help my yard

I've recently moved from renting an apartment in a complex to renting a privately-owned duplex. It has a little (8 ft by about 15 ft) yard-ish thing right now that I would like to transform into a real yard. The owners won't pay for it, but would be fine with whatever I do to it. The problem is, right now the yard is completely overrun with weeds; everything else gets choked out by them. I don't know what kind of weeds, there's a variety of them. The other problem is that I live in Phoenix and the ground is very hard and dry so pulling the weeds by hand is going to be... difficult if not impossible. I've seen previous yard questions, but I am a special desert-dwelling snowflake and a little bit of a hippy, so I'm looking for more ideas than the "poison the whole thing" that I see in some of the other questions and also Phoenix-specific advice. Plant or weed identification time.

What is this plant (or weed) growing in my back yard? It has multiple, thick stems with tiny thorns, green leaves that turn light green/reddish as the plant gets bigger, and a big root system with roots that are woody and slightly rubbery. It does not have any tendrils or flowers and left to grow, it begins to resemble a small tree. [more inside]
