A local community college is considering new ways to format student email accounts to avoid problems arising from multiple students having the same name. One suggestion is to include the last four digits of the Social Security Number as part of the email address. I don't know anything about FERPA, but this doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Before I speak up on the issue, though, I was hoping someone here could provide me with some additional info on privacy laws.

My boss owns the apartment in which I reside. Above the front door is a large and ominous security camera replete with a bank of infrared lights. Can someone answer me: is this scenario legal?

Metaphorical question, but a serious one: Stuck at an intersection. How should I proceed when the light changes?
I'm in a bad pickle at this time, so I'm reaching out to the Green to help me decide which the best next step is moving forward. To keep it as simple as possible, I got in a car accident more than two years ago, using a major car rental company. I got an unexpected bill from the car rental company almost two years later (late December 2011) for a high amount (let's say over $30,000) that the other party apparently were given by the rental company due to their alleged injures. I had no insurance when I was in the accident. For many reasons, I felt the collection of the debt was unfair. I had temporary legal representation (a family friend), but he was unable to get the car rental company to forgo the collection, so he bowed out early January. [more inside]

I have some questions about crafting and copyright. If I make objects out of old boardgames and then sell them online, am I running afoul of any copyright or trademark laws? As a contrived example, let's say that I make a lamp out of a Monopoly game, using the actual game board and pieces. If I try to sell it on Etsy, would Hasbro have any kind of claim against me? I run a retail business in Toronto, Canada. It's an independently owned business--like a mom and pop store. I need to fire someone because he's incompetent and his presence actually makes more work for the other staff. I have emailed and texted with this staff member (who has worked with us for 13 months) regarding his considerable transgressions but we do not have "paperwork" or "forms" in the traditional sense. His work never improves. What exactly do I have to do to fire him without worrying about legal issues? Two weeks pay? Three? Does the firing need to be written in addition to verbal or is just verbal fine? What's the best way for me to cover my ass? [more inside]
