My common-law partner and I are in the process of filing forms for her sponsorship of me to receive permanent resident status in Canada. She changed her marital status to common-law on her most recent tax forms (we have been living together since 2009). She is now being audited by Revenue Canada, since this reflects a change from her last tax return and how her GST/HST refunds are calculated. [more inside]

Hi , I was wondering if any mefiers could help advise me on potentially choosing a certain module for my llb (undergraduate law) option. I was thinking of choosing the legal writing and advocacy option, but I am not sure. Has anyone any idea of what is usually expected in a module such as this? It strikes me as an option very similar that provided in American law schools. How are these usually assessed? The naive bone in me is entertaining the prospect of a slightly less harsh marking criteria compared to the substantive core modules I shall be studying as well; but I could be wrong. My course book mentions the break down of the module as follows: Legal Writing and Advocacy: - Reflective Learning Journal (40%) - Response to Consultation Document (30%) - Oral Presentation 1 - (15%) - Oral Presentation 2 - (15%) [more inside]

There are companies that enjoy tax exemption as a 501c3 and yet actually make quite a substantial profit and operate chiefly according to a business/profit-making model. They don't seem to meet some of the key criteria of a non-profit. How do they do this and are there cases in which non-profits end up being forced to drop their non-profit status? If so, does this usually happen because of challenges from legislators, IRS, community members or who? If it helps, I'm thinking of UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) which pulled 750million in profit last year and is involved in a public battle against Highmark BCBS over who enjoys the title of regional insurance monopolist. (Apparently they value profit over their professed healthcare mission.) Thanks for any information!

YANAL, but... A young friend of mine got a job with a service company that does substantial business with his (then) current employer. In short order, the employer-to-be rescinded the job offer and the current employer terminated him. [more inside]

I live in a pre-war (1920's?) Brooklyn apartment building. Recently, the ceiling in the kitchen collapsed due to a leak in the pipes above, spreading plaster, dust, and wet and dry gunk everywhere. Now the landlord has completed a shoddy-looking repair, again leaving everything in the kitchen covered in dust and powder and sticky gunk. Every. Single. Thing. Two questions: how do I find out if we are in danger of asbestos exposure? How do I proceed if we are?

Recently I entered a discussion about the following scenario: If a college student at a state university says they can't take a test on Friday, because of their religious beliefs, should their professor be required to honor that and reschedule the test for that student?
