Should I pay a pardon service to handle my Canadian record suspension?

Decades ago, I got into some trouble with the law in Canada. I now have a record that shows a single summary conviction and a suspended sentence. This has not mattered until recently, when I was unable to pass a criminal background check. Should I apply for record suspension myself and eschew a "pardon" service (as suggested by the Parole Board of Canada, who warn of fraudulent services) or pay to have someone else take care of _some_ of the headache? Seeking info & resources on data privacy/confidentiality in UK hiring

We've recently started using an online application system at the company I work for and we're trying to set things up fairly so that some hired employees (e.g., in an admin, management, or HR role) can review unsuccessful candidates' and new applicants' files. Are there any protections we should put in place (legally or otherwise) so that new hires or other employees in these privileged roles cannot see the notes on their own applications, the applications and notes of their hiring competition, or applications and notes of fellow new hires? General advice welcome as well, e.g., if there are any potential use cases or other reasons as to why or why not this would be a good idea. We have the ability to fully customise the online application system as we wish. This is in the UK.

Brother & Sister-in-law becoming distant from family.

I have a younger half-brother who got married 2-3 years ago with a woman that he met at work. The two of them got married in court, and I had no idea that this even took place up until someone told me about it. It was either a family relative or someone else who told me. The two of them are introverted people who kept to themselves. The sister-in-law is a quiet person who was fully accepted by our family. The two of them eventually bought a house, and had a child at the beginning of this year. Everyone was excited about the new munchkin especially our parents. However, it was brought to my attention that the two couple have been very distant for the following reasons. [more inside]

Filing US taxes homeless

What does a federal legal assistant do?

I recently applied for and am now actively being considered for a legal assistant/senior case technician position with the federal government (Social Security Administration). The job description sounds a lot like what I used to do as a paralegal (reviewing records, analyzing cases, making recommendations for further action, contacting medical providers), but I'm worried that what I've actually applied for is a secretarial position (e.g., making travel arrangements, maintaining calendars, hanging out a copy machine a lot, collating and binding copies). Is it housing discrimination to require an American credit history?

At the age of 46 I had to get my younger brother, who also lives in the U.S. but for a much longer time, to cosign my lease because my wife and I have only a year of American credit history being recent immigrants. Is it legal for my landlord to do this?

My lease, like most, says that subleasing is not allowed without manager's consent. I came in on a sublease and later let the manager know I was planning on subleasing. She just declared she will not accept any subleasing any more. Does anyone know if this is legal for her to do this? It's breaking faith, but not breaking the literal contract. FYI, I live in Missouri.

Is our lawyer incompetent? Is it even worth changing lawyers now?

We think our lawyer, who has been working our case for over two years, may be incompetent, but we find it hard to determine for sure. He seems very compliant in regard to the other side, while being subject to brush-offs and delaying tactics from the other side. Even if he is incompetent, we're not sure what's involved in changing lawyers. Perhaps you can shed some light on this. [more inside]

Professional jobs that require night or shift work?

My parents have always worked night shifts as a nurse at a geriatric support centre, and as a mail sorter for the post office. They make enough money. They've made their schedules work for them, and also raised 4 kids while doing so. Because of their shift work, they do get a lot of time off-- maybe working double shifts sometimes, or three 12-hour shifts in a row, but then they get 3 days off. They also tend to know their schedules a month ahead of time. I do not work well in a 9-5 M-F schedule, so I'd like to know what are other similar jobs to this. [more inside]

Sure, I was arrested. But what does it MEAN?

YANML. Five years ago, I was (rightly) arrested for shoplifting in New York City. A public defender pled me down from a misdemeanor to a Disorderly Conduct charge, with the (apparently fairly standard for first-time offenders) addition that if I didn't get in trouble again for 6 months, my record would be cleared. I didn't get in trouble; presumably my record was cleared. But what does that actually mean? Is it like I've never done anything at all? Help me out. I think I've been harassed and I don't know what to do.

So I need some sound advice. I think I was harassed a number of months ago at a local YMCA by another member. I decided to file this complaint internally, and now I'm worried I'm being stonewalled. Need an employments right lawyer STAT
