I'm doing a mortgage assumption for a co-op in NYC. It was co-owned and the other owner was bought out, with their name now being taken off the mortgage and the co-op stock certificate. I'm paying for a lawyer for the bank. Do I need a lawyer for myself, too? It seems straightforward to me but I wanted to be sure there's nothing I need a lawyer to do for me that the bank lawyer won't take care of.
Does anyone know personally a trustworthy solicitor in Ealing or Brentford areas? I have asked around and so far had no success. It is just for a standard Will, but there are a few complications and intricacies, so need someone very clever and very honest but reasonably priced-will pay the going amount of course. Impossible?

Everyone always tells you that going to law school and being a lawyer will open up all types of job possibilities. I tried being a big firm lawyer and am don't want to continue doing it. I'm looking to figure out life after biglaw and what that actually means. Looking for advice on how to figure out what's next, where to look for jobs that might play to a legal skill set, and how and what to highlight about biglaw experience when looking for the next job. We think our lawyer, who has been working our case for over two years, may be incompetent, but we find it hard to determine for sure. He seems very compliant in regard to the other side, while being subject to brush-offs and delaying tactics from the other side. Even if he is incompetent, we're not sure what's involved in changing lawyers. Perhaps you can shed some light on this. [more inside]
I want to create a legal document declaring in robust legalese that all of my intellectual property (except works specifically noted) shall enter the public domain upon my death and a website to host (or link to p2p copies of) archives of those works. I want the legal documents to make it easy for other people to use or adapt for themselves and ideally for the site to act as a host or tracker for them to post to. I'm seeking legal and technical advice as well as general input in order to make this happen. [more inside]
Back in 2007 in San Francisco I was assaulted and had to have some not insignificant reconstructive surgery as a result. The cops were cops and declined to press charges because the guy lived a couple counties over even though I had multiple witnesses. I had a great (friend of a friend) pro bono lawyer who got me a civil judgement (in default) to the tune of $300k. However I've never seen a dime. The guy held no property on record and didn't even have a steady job with a paycheck from which I could garnish his wages. Clearly some time has passed and I'd like advice about looking into this again and seeing if I could actually get my hands on any of this money. I'd like to not bother my original lawyer as she did great by me, but made it clear that she had taken the case as far as she could. I know, YANML and YANAL, etc.
You are, of course, not my Australian lawyer. However, my SO may soon be hiring one for a suit against a hospital. To ensure that the lawyer we're hiring is the kind that we think we're hiring, she's asked me what the difference (if any) is between a no-win, no fee lawyer, and a lawyer that is hired under a contingency agreement. I will be seeking a consultation with a real estate lawyer to talk about an issue with my property line which is the side of my house. Unfortunately there is a negative gradient and a lot of water coming onto my property (and into my basement) from the adjoining property. I have an easement for "ingress & egress" on that property. The landowner there has not responded to my repeated requests to correct the negative gradient. [more inside]
I'll be shooting a feature film in L.A. later this year, and I need some advice about how to handle the business side. I'm hoping that somewhere there's some sort of low-budget service that provides help to people who are new to the process. [more inside]
A friend works overseas for a US-based defence contractor. He's been involved in a somewhat work-related incident in his country of work and his employer is, long story short, refusing to advise him, maybe even turning against him. Lots of details we don't want to put on the internet. Need to find a good attorney in the US that has specialization in working with employment rights, particularly in international situations for US based entities (not sure if the defence contractor part is relevant or not). If state matters, pick Texas.

Don't talk to the police is convincing and sound advice. Getting a lawyer to represent you so that the police don't trick you into a conviction is a great idea. Family law in Mumbai? Wondering if anyone has recommendations for lawyers practicing in Mumbai/Bombay... An older (60s) Indian couple I know appears to be heading for divorce, and I am trying to help the woman as best I can. Unfortunately, there are a number of complicating factors, and I do not personally know any lawyers in Mumbai, so I thought I would ask here. I realize it's a long shot, but it's worth a try... My dad passed away this year and my mom has very generously decided to gift the house to my sister and I rather than. The house is in Canada, I live in the U.S. (Permanent residence). My sister and brother in law bought my half of the house when the mortgage was due (approximately April 1st) so I now suddenly have a 6 digit lump sum of cash in a Canadian account. I have not signed anything yet. I want to protect this from taxation, I also don't want to jeopardize my permanent residence status or potential citizenship. I know I need a lawyer, but what kind and how do I find a good one? I am in Wisconsin, particularly Eau Claire since that's probably important.

Everywhere I look, I see blog posts, AskMeFi comments, etc., about how you shouldn't go to law school, about the crushing debt that it imposes, stories about how people hate their lives as lawyers, about the masses of layoffs in the industry, or about how the work isn't what, or as interesting as, they expected. Now, my question is -- are there any notable positive blogs / perspectives out there, written by a lawyer? Comments from MeFi lawyers are definitely welcome. [more inside]
