How do I remove this stain--or what do I do if I can't?

I picked up my laundry from the laundromat yesterday--I did wash-and-fold this time because I didn't feel like dealing with the laundromat on a holiday weekend--and my favorite purple shirt has a bunch of dark splotches on the front. It looks like it just got water dripped on it or something, except that the spots don't dry, and they also don't go away with mere water. What should I do? [more inside]

Laundry challenge!

So, I am wearing a dress today that I haven't worn since last summer, because it's a warmer weather dress (a green gingham version of this dress, actually). Upon changing a work from my riding clothes, I discovered an odd, yellow stain on it. The stain didn't respond to soap and water and I couldn't figure out what it was. Then I noticed a similar residue in the pocket. So now I figure that the last time I wore it, I left some multivitamins in my pocket, and washed and dried (and somehow ironed without noticing this? I need better light in my place) the dress with the multivitamins in the pocket. Do I have any hope of lifting the stain now after all this time and after heat has been applied? What should I do to improve my chances of getting it without destroying the fabric?

Why do my jeans smell after one wear?

Recently my jeans have started lasting only one wear before beginning to smell musty. About halfway through the day, I notice that I've been sweating enough to make the waistband slightly damp and there is a distinct odor coming from my jeans. It comes back quickly after washing, and I've never experienced this before in my life - I'm used to jeans lasting a week or so before switching them out. How do I keep from making my jeans smell, or how do I eliminate the odor permanently in washing? [more inside]

101 guide to NYC laundry service

I've been dropping off my laundry for the past several years now, but really only know about the drop and fold. My work wardrobe is more business attire these days (male), but can't seem to figure out the terms and services usually available. This may sound a little silly, but I run into language barriers and unclear signs in every laundromat in a 10 block radius. So whats usually available besides the classic wash & fold (and dry cleaning)? -I have button down shirts, what does pressed mean? -Whats the correct term for wash and iron? Sometimes they look puzzled. (sometimes they don't have this service) -If you have your shirts done itemized, the $1.75 each option, what are they doing? -How do most men get there work shirts laundered at these places? Thanks, and note: these laundromat persons around me are all pleasant, and hard workers, but I just can't figure out whats what.

Saucesplosion: How do I best clean this hot sauce or ketchup off fabric?

In what is probably the strangest cleaning issue I've had to date, a seemingly inexplicable,* large glob of hot sauce (or maybe ketchup? hard to tell) found its way onto the floor of our bedroom. What's worse is that it was under several bags of clean laundry that had been brought up from the laundry room a few days ago. What's even worse than that is that I lifted those laundry bags up and put them on my bed where I was going to sort and fold the laundry. So, now we have sauce 1) on the wooden floor, 2) on my bedsheets in small amounts, 3) potentially on some of the clothes that were in the laundry bags, and 4) in thick globs on the exterior of all of our laundry bags (this is the one I'm least sure how to deal with). Help me! [more inside]

Have you ever used a laundry pick-up/delivery service in Brooklyn?

Laundry is a major scourge in my life. It occurs to me that there are services that pick up and drop off your laundry. How…do those work? What sort of bag do I need to put my stuff in? How risky is it, i.e., what is the likelihood something will get lost or damaged? Most importantly, is there a service you can recommend in the Prospect Heights/Park Slope area?

Where do you keep semi-clean clothes?

I know I should throw my dirty clothes down the laundry chute so that I can wash them later. I also know to bring clean clothes up from the laundry room and put them in my dresser or hang them up in the closet. But where do I put the clothes that have been worn at least once but that don't yet need to be washed? I'm talking about jeans, sweaters, and certain shirts, not underwear, socks or undershirts. Putting the semi-clean clothes back in the dresser doesn't seem ideal because they have some dirt or dust that I don't want to get on the unworn clothes. Right now, I fold up the semi-clean clothes and put them on the floor next to my side of the bed, but my wife objects to my clothes pile. How do other people handle this? Is there some standard system that I've missed out on?

Oh no! I just washed my four favorite white shirts with black jeans.

Now they are yellow. Also, since they are still wet, I can't tell if they're a normal-looking shade of off-white (eggshell, beige) or if they looked old/stained. My guess is that they will be yellowed, stained-looking button downs when they are dry. Is there anything I can do?

However, I don't have a lot of room in my laundry room to lay them out to dry, so they just end up in a laundry basket and sit there for ages because I can't figure out how to efficiently wash and dry them. Can we mismatch a stacked washer/dryer?

Our washer & dryer are a stacked set of Frigidaire Gallery front-loading machines. The washing machine, which is 10 years old, just gave up the ghost. We'd like to replace it, but they don't currently sell a Frigidaire model that is designed to be stacked with our Frigidaire dryer (which is only 3 years old, and working just fine). I can't seem to find an appliance store that will sell us a different brand of washing machine, because they say it's not safe to stack mismatched units. Is there any way we can do this safely, so we don't have to replace a perfectly good (and expensive!) dryer just to replace the washing machine? [more inside]

Pimp my laundry!

So, we just got a new tumble dryer because I just wasn't managing the laundry and getting it dry before it got musty, etc. I have been preparing for the first wash and dry, and looking at all the labels, and hey presto, almost nothing can be tumble dried according to the labels. A pair of gym trousers can, a pair can't. A tshirt can, a tshirt can't. I haven't had a tumble dryer for years and years, and I am responsible for the household washing, so I'm now stressed about essentially still having the same problem. I'm almost inclined to try on the cold cycle, but M claims that will not dry the clothes. But also, as I've become stressed about this yet again, the question arises: why can't I cope with this and why do I get stressed about it, when thousands upon millions of households manage just fine. I have a sneaking suspicion that they don't. But I'm not very confident about my housewifely abilities, so I doubt myself there. [more inside]

I've got a handmade all-cotton knot-style quilt that was made by my mother. Since she has passed away, this is of course a very precious item to me, and I don't want to do anything to damage it. It is, however, in desperate need of a wash. Is this something I can just throw in the machine? Is there anything I should be wary or warned of? Please give me your suggestions for large, very sturdy grocery/laundry carts. Said cart will have to do duty carrying groceries from my parking space to my apartment (which is across and down the street) but more importantly, it must be able to handle 1-2 35 pound containers of cat litter on occasion, when I need to buy for the boys.
