Looking for a tool to reccommend a laptop configuration

Is there a tool online that might be able to tell me what parameters I would want for a new computer (probably laptop) given my current patterns of use? Looking in stores leads me to think I don't need the high end models but I'd hate to buy something only to find out I should have sprung for the extra RAM. [more inside]

New laptop PC slow as heck!

What would cause the laptop to be so slow right out of the box? I was given a "new" computer at work. It is a HP Business Notebook PC with the product model = Compaq 8510p. It is so slow opening and closing windows, launching programs and starting up and shutting down--then sometimes freezes up. It is 3 years old and the warranty has expired as I was told by the HP helpdesk. I have searched the web and asked a few IT friends what the heck it could be since it has never been used. My boss doesn't want to hear any complaints about it since it's new out of the box--he figures it should be working perfectly. Should I take it to a PC shop to get it optimized or diagnosed in some way? It's driving me crazy! What could be causing this?

Laptop battery troubles

Follow up to previous question....4yo Dell Inspiron laptop suddenly giving me the old "Plugged in but not charging" routine. Froze the battery for a day but no luck. So I bought a nice new one from Amazon that charged right up and worked for a week. No this one is giving me the same message. Any ideas? Or a place to turn to troubleshoot things? Any help would be appreciated.

Dell laptop battery issue

Hello. I have a 4yo Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop and about a 10 days ago it stopped charging. It said, "0% available, plugged in but not charging". Took the battery out and put it back in a couple of times and it went back to normal, charged up fine. It happened 2 other times but it went back to charging. However, now it seems to be stuck in the - "plugged in but not charging mode". Any ideas? Thanks

Do I have laptop repair trust issues?

I am not a computer repair person, and apparently, don't know if I trust those who are. I recently had a problem with the frame around the screen of my laptop (Dell Inspiron, about 5 years old). I took it to a shop to be repaired, and while there I mentioned that the computer was running a bit slowly, and asked if they could also install more RAM (if that might make it run faster). The technician said yes, and for the same price of installing the RAM, he would give it their tune up service. [more inside]

I need a new laptop yesterday

My laptop died a few days ago. I'm probably starting a new job next week for which I will need a laptop. The deceased was a one-year-old (JUSt out of warranty) Dell Inspiron 1464 whose motherboard got fried from unknown causes (possibly because it was sitting and idling in a hot part of the house with no way to dissipate the heat). It cost me about $500-something and we were a good team. Question: Should I just get another one of those or try for an upgrade within that same price range? [more inside]

is my inspiron finally dead?

Laptop diagnosis? XP sp3, Dell inspiron 6000. The other day it just died while I was using it. Just powered down (instant black screen). When I tried to power it up, I could hear it coming alive for about 8 seconds, some lights flashed as you would expect, then it died. If you wait 24 hours or so, it will boot up normally, but after about 10 minutes it will die, as above, and then the next day will start up again for a bit, then die, etc etc. [more inside]
