Okay, so the friendly tech got my friend halfway through re-loading Windows on her laptop without mentioning that she would lose anything she hadn't already backed up. She had to stop halfway through (thankfully), and I pointed out the problem to her before she was able to pop in the disk they sent to finish the job. I'm hoping her files are still on the hard drive, but have never opened up a laptop. Is a laptop hard drive the same as a desktop? I know how to set it up as a slave drive if it is, but am worried that I'll open the thing up and not know what to do next. Anybody able to verify that they're the same?

I've a dual boot windows/linux laptop which is periodically attached to a novell network. Does anyone know of a utility to copy files from a drive on a laptop to the network, where they'll get backed up, without me having to remember to do it?

Battery power cycling - it's offered as advice for poor battery life on pretty much anything, from cell phones to laptops. Heck, T-Mobile told me to do it today after I switched phones and the same battery dropped from 50 hours of standby time to 9 hours. However, I've only ever cycled one thing - a laptop battery - and that dropped its capacity from 4 hours to 30 minutes.
Because of that I'm a bit wary, so my question is, what's the logic behind power cycling a battery, and has anyone actually seen any benefits from it?

I own a used IBM 600X Laptop with very little Ram. Would anyone know the maximum amount of Ram I can install. Also what is the model number or description of the Ram I should purchase from a computer store? Thanks in advance.

Portions of my Dell laptop keyboard keep going in and out. Sometimes, one group of keys won't work (5, 6, -, del, and ins, among a couple others). Now, it's tab, tilde, 1, q, a, and Z. The problem only appears when restarting the laptop, never during use. Any suggestions?

I don't use them on a PDA, but as replaceable surfaces on my laptop's touchpad so I'm open to trying something other than a screen protector. Any ideas? [more inside]
